3Behold, children are an inheritance of Yahweh,
The fruit of the womb is a reward.
4Like arrows in the hand of a warrior,
So are the children of one’s youth.
Ps 127.3-4
Welcome to our adoption page!
We are the Corbins. For almost 10 years of marriage, we have wanted children, but have struggled with infertility. Through Jesus, God has adopted us into His family (Ephesians 1:5). We have always thought children to be a wonderful gift. We are excited to welcome a child home into our family through adoption! We want to be able to love our children as God has loved us.
During our marriage, we have lived in Oklahoma and Utah. But now – through a wild set of circumstances – we call Yokohama, Japan home. We have seen the Lord’s hand in many conversations and small decisions that have led us to be church planters with a Christian organization called Mustard Seed Network. As missionaries in Japan, adoption also provides a unique opportunity to proclaim the Gospel. Japan has a declining birth rate. The urban Japanese culture does not value traditional family life, and having children of your own is thought to be an unnecessary burden. Having kids - and raising them in a distinctly Christian home - is a witness to our good God and the redemption he offers.
What will our adoption look like?
Though we live in Japan, we are adopting a baby boy or girl from the States. It is still considered a U.S. domestic infant adoption, just with a few additional costs to re-certify our home study, buy flights to the U.S., etc. We are currently working on getting our Home Study re-certified for our Japan address, completing paperwork and payment with our adoption agency (Angel Adoption), and funding our adoption. Once we confirm a match with a birth mom, we will fly back to America for the birth of the baby, stay to transfer guardianship, issue the baby’s passport, and be cleared from both the hospital and airline… a process that can take as little as 5-8 weeks. It is a convoluted process to be sure, but we trust that God is with us amid each step.
How much will it cost?
All-in-all our agency expects the adoption to cost around $61,000. Here is a rough breakdown:
Already Paid: ($20,900)
$500 (Legal Fees)
$2,500 (Home Study)
$17,900 (Agency Fees)
Remaining Costs: ($40,100)
$5,800 (Agency fees)
$3,000 (Home Study re-cert)
$4,000 (Flights)
$27,300 (Adoption/legal/birth mom costs)
We have been blessed in several ways up to this point! Amy’s Legacy Foundation awarded us a $10,000 grant (thanks Bob, Patrick, & Shelby!).
Karis Adoption Fund and Lifesong for Orphans have awarded us matching grants totaling $7,000, and have given us a funding account!
Gobena Coffee has also decided to partner with us in our adoption (thanks Shane!).
How can you help?
Why are we sharing our story? Here is what we are humbly asking of you:
1. Pray. Would you please join us in praying for our adoption? We want to be a blessing to both the baby and birth mother that we get matched with.
2. Give. Would you consider donating towards our adoption expenses? We – quite literally – could not do this without the generosity of others. And, because of our matching grants, all of what is donated (up to. $7,000) is doubled!!*
3. Coffee. If you like coffee (or know someone who does) buy Gobena coffee or products with our link: https://my.gobena.org/stories/corbin-adoption-fundraiser
Because of our matching grants, 100% profit made with our partnership will go towards our adoption!**
4. Share. Share this story with anyone and everyone! If you think there is a friend, family member, or church that our story would resonate with, please share it!
Thank you for reading about our adoption. We know many of you have been praying for and supporting us long before we posted here. We will continue to update on this page as our adoption progresses! May the Lord Jesus be glorified in every step of this process. We are so very grateful to Him.
With Love,
Bo & Sharisa
