O’Malley Family Adoption Journey

It feels surreal and vulnerable to be announcing this…almost like when you start telling people you are pregnant again, right when you find out, instead of waiting until after the first trimester. So much is unknown. So much could happen. And you are certain that many people think you are totally loco for adding more. But here it is:

We have started the process of international adoption!

Here are answers to a few questions that some of you might be wondering about:

~First and foremost: WHY?

Garrick and I are followers of Christ, and we have felt God’s calling to care and love the vulnerable in this way. We have talked about adoption from the very beginning of our relationship.  After four biological blessings, Garrick volunteering as a guardian ad litem, and my involvement helping other families raise funds for their adoptions through Noonday, we’ve still felt God’s strong pull in our hearts towards this.  We are surrounded by so many blessings, and God invites us to share this with others.  And it is our joy to do so!

I used to work in the adoption field.  We are not naive.  This isn’t glamorous.  It’s messy.  We have no desire to glamorize a child’s heartache. We also don’t feel like God has called us to live comfortable lives, accumulate wealth and gripe about the injustices in the world.  He calls us to action. He promises to redeem and restore life to the broken-hearted, and He desires to use His people to do this.  And it’s hard and beautiful and worth it.   Our God is One who brings beauty from ashes, and Garrick & I are humbled and excited to partner with Him in the work that only He can do.

We know this journey will challenge and stretch our family in ways that we can prepare for but also in ways that might be completely unpredictable.  We know it involves sacrifice.  Saying Yes to something involves saying No to other things.  But thankfully we don’t believe we are called to do this alone.  Where God calls, He equips.  And we are heavily relying on our incredible community to come around our family with support, encouragement, prayers, and giving financially.  Many of you already have, and it truly means the world to us!  We need all of this and will continue to need it throughout this process.

~Where did you come up with this number?

We have been approved for two $4,000 matching grants through Lifesong for Orphans. Every donation given will be immediately matched and available for us to use towards adoption expenses until $8,000 has been given and matched making a total of $16,000 in our adoption fund.  This will help us tremendously to be able to keep the process moving in 2024!  We are currently still working on the first huge step- the home study process.   This takes months of meetings, paperwork, background checks, evaluations, etc.  After we have a completed home study, that opens doors for applying for other grants and funding to help with the additional adoption expenses as the total will be much higher than what this matching grant will provide.  If you are interested in the breakdown of expenses, I am happy to pass that along to you.  This whole process will likely take around 3 years, though there is a lot of unpredictability.

~Why international adoption?

Foster Care is the route taken in the United States for caring for children in need in the age ranges that we feel is the best fit for our family.  For many reasons I’d be happy to talk with you about over coffee, we don’t think foster care would be a good fit for our family at this time.  We know there is a huge need in this area as well and are so very thankful for our friends and family who have answered the call to foster care.  We desire to support and encourage them however we can!  Is it ideal for a child to be able to be cared for by their birth family and raised in their birth country?  Of course.  But sadly sometimes that is not possible.  We can lament the sadness of how many orphans there are around the globe or we can be part of the solution.  Like with any children, we are not guaranteed any particular results.  We are just called to be faithful to do our part.  And to surrender the rest.

I also felt like God was not done using Spanish in my life and wanted to use it again for good.  I think that could be a great comfort to a child going through such a huge transition to be welcomed into a family that can communicate with them from the very start.  Garrick and I need to refresh on it for sure because it has been a hot minute, and the kids desire to learn.  We feel like it would be best for our family to maintain the current birth order for now, and Colombia currently has a program with children in need of families in that age range.  So that’s what we are pursuing at this time.  If things change, we’ll certainly let our community of supporters know!

~Why is it so expensive and so hard to adopt?

This is a complicated answer, another discussion better had over coffee, but a large part of the answer is simply because this isn’t about us.  It’s about what’s in the best interest of children.  Children need to be protected and lots of steps have to be taken throughout the process to ensure that everything being done is truly what’s in the best interest of that child.  And all the people doing those jobs and investigations and education and care deserve to be paid for this incredibly important work.

For any of you who read this far and made it to the last paragraph, wow, even that means a lot!  For all those willing and able to give here and join us in our adoption journey in this way, we are so humbled and grateful! And for those who have already supported us thus far in our adoption journey, we appreciate you more than you know! Thank you!!

Up and Down Day

October 29, 2024

So many ups and downs in this process and today had both!  I’ll start with the down – a large packet of important paperwork had been sent to the sectretary of state to be apostilled (a required process of authenticating documents for international purposes).  I got a call today that some of those documents will need to be returned to me at our cost and redone because of a couple small details dealing with the way they were notarized.  This might sound like no big deal guys, but these things get super discouraging.  It’s a lot of running around to various places to get these documents gathered and then signed and notarized by the correct people, all of whom are busy professionals (doctors, psychologists, etc) that I am sure will not be thrilled that we are asking them to do this again for us.  And some charge for their time.  And then we’ll pay to get the packet sent over and returned to us securely and quickly all over again.  Sigh.  It’s ok.  We will get it done and it will be fine.  Just another step/hurdle. But this also made it all the sweeter when I got this great and surprising news later today – WE HAVE OFFICIALLY COMPLETED OUR MATCHING GRANT IN FULL!  This means we have the money available in our adoption fund now to cover our next upcoming large expenses!  Priase God from whom all blessings flow!  So encouraging!  He is faithful – again and again!

You can be praying for the grants we need to cover our travel and costs in country next as we have been busy applying for those!

Dossier almost ready!

October 18, 2024

Time for an update!

We have almost everything ready for our dossier (the packet that gets sent to Colombia) and are waiting on our immigration document which needs to be included in that packet.

Boxes $125 and $25 now are also covered!  Yay!  Little by little we are getting closer to completing our matching grant!  Here’s an updated pic for you to see what’s left if you’d like to claim a box!  In the meantime we have also applied for a grant from Show Hope to help with the international travel costs of our adoption (this current matching grant is all for adoption costs prior to travel), but we will not know whether or not we’ll receive assistance from them until early 2025.

We are also at a point where there is a potential of us receiving files from our agency of precious children for us to review and discern whether or not it is the child God has for our family or is perhaps a child we are meant to pray for but needs to be placed in another family.  As you can imagine, this is an emotional process, and we want to be open and obedient to whatever God calls us to.  Please join us in prayer about this as well.  We are so very thankful for each of you and the unique support and encouragement you each bring us through your finances, your prayers, your conversations, etc, etc.  You are all needed.  This is not a solo journey – thank you for journeying with us.

Immigration and Summer

August 15, 2024

Hey friends!

First I’m sorry if you got multiple notifications about updates (if you are signed up for those) – I was having technical difficulties so this took me a few tries haha! Just a quick update to let you all know that everything has been sent off to US Immigration!  AND the box for $130 in our Fill-a-Box Fundraiser to complete our matching grant has also now been covered!  Hooray!  Plenty of boxes left to choose from if you’d like to contribute to our matching grant (take a look at my previous update about that to learn more).  While we wait for immigration, we’re working on gathing items needed for our dossier.  There’s a whole list but just to give you a little glimpse into one step – getting extra original birth certificates for everyone in our family.  Somehow by God’s sweet grace I already had extra original birth certificates for my kids born in South Carolina.  GA and FL were fairly easy to order and arrived pretty quickly.  Illinois on the other hand tried to tell me it would take 3-6 months!  SO, we had our adoption agnecy write a letter requesting it be expedited for us- we’ll see what happens!  We also completed some more required education this summer by attending an adoption conference in Alabama called Rooted in Love, which was great!  We got to combine this with a visit to see our precious friends, the Lee Family, who also bravely watched our kids while Garrick and I attended the conference.  In other family news, my youngest started Kindergarten and my oldest started middle school!  Crazy!  But we had a blast this summer, and I think it’s going to be a great school year!  Here’s a pic from our summer 🙂

Process and Finances Update!

July 16, 2024

Hey friends! Time for an adoption process update!

We have spent the past few months working on our home study and though it felt neverending and overwhelming at many times, we are finally done with all our home study assignments, paperwork, appointments, evaluations, and interviews! Hooray and Praise Jesus!! This process covered not only education requirements and present family lifestyle, health, & home, but also essentially both mine and Garrick’s entire life story. So it took a bit! Our wonderful social workers are busy making the final edits to our home study document so it’s ready for immigration and Colombia. Once we have that official home study document, we’ll use it to apply for grants and send it to US immigration. We have our immigration paperwork ready to go!  While we are waiting for immigration approval, we’ll work on a few documents that are specifically required by Colombia. Then we’ll be ready to send everything over to Colombia (it’s called your dossier). You can be praying for the grants that we need to continue to fund our adoption process and also for God’s hand and perfect timing to be over the US immigration approval and dossier process as that time frame can vary quite a bit. And of course for our precious new child, waiting for a family somewhere in Colombia – only God knows who that is right now, but please pray with us that God would be speaking to that little heart now that we are coming and that God is making us ready. Yes Lord – use this time to make us ready in the ways that only You can. A huge praise is that through the generous donations of our family, friends, and even strangers, we have been able to use the GoFundMe and the matching grant resources from Lifesong to cover all our adoption expenses thus far! HE IS FAITHFUL!! This fill-a-box fundraiser activity is a fun physical representation of the remaining donations we need to complete the remainder of our matching grant with Lifesong. We needed 29 people to claim a box, we posted this to facebook, and now have boxes $90, $145, $140, and $135 covered! So that leaves 25 boxes left!  If you have not given towards our adoption yet and would like to, just pick a box and then give that amount immediately at this link. And yes, obviously Niko is holding this to draw extra attention with his cuteness :).

Why is this not showing your donation?

July 16, 2024

I have previously been posting on Facebook and providing a direct link to our Lifesong fund, but many people who might want updates are not on Facebook or do not see them when I post, so this is a new avenue we are trying to keep those who want to stay informed up to date!  You can subscribe here to receive any updates immediately!  And people can also donate to our Lifesong fund here now as well.  That is why it’s showing 0 donations as of right now :).  And just because every update is better with a picture, here’s a glorious one Garrick took from our backyard at sunset recently!
