Hope & Healing for our son Emet

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him,
so you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.
Romans 15:13

This verse has become an anchor for our family over the past year as peace and joy seemed far off and hard to find.  We keep reminding ourselves of two things:

1. Peace & joy come from trusting God.

2. We are going to get through this.

We were married in 2004 and anticipated starting a family toward the end of Brandon’s seminary education.  After experiencing unexplained infertility, God moved our hearts towards adoption.  In 2012 we adopted our sons Emet and Ezra from Ethiopia.  Lydia joined our family in 2018 from China.  Our family makes very conspicuous entrances..not just because we are multiracial, but we are also a taller-than-average bunch!

Every adoption is born from loss, and many adopted children come from hard places with hard beginnings.  Birth to age five is a critical time in the development of a child’s brain.  Our son Emet joined our family around 4.5 years old and while we don’t know details about those early years, we know enough.  Emet was diagnosed by medical professionals with Complex Developmental Trauma Disorder (more commonly known as Reactive Attachment Disorder or RAD).

Over the years, we have exhausted every available resource at our disposal attempting to provide Emet with quality post-adoption trauma-informed care…Support Groups, Trust-Based Relational Intervention, Equine Therapy, Psych-educational Evaluation, Individual Counseling, Medication Management, Family Counseling… you name it, we have probably researched it and tried to access it for Emet.

Despite all these outpatient interventions, during adolescence, Emet’s concerning behaviors continued to escalate and increase in frequency.  This is fairly common for individuals with early childhood trauma, but knowing that hasn’t made any of this any easier.  Emet ran away from home nine times in six months, sometimes for 12-, 18-, and even 37- hours, and his inability to adequately assess danger became concerning to us and his medical providers.  As his behaviors escalated so did the recommended levels of care.  Emet was admitted to two intensive outpatient programs, three partial hospitalization programs, one 30-day residential treatment facility, and four acute inpatient hospitalizations in four months.  Emet was even hospitalized the entire week of Christmas 2023!  Insurance was a hurdle at every turn, sometimes downgrading his level of care before professionals felt he was ready.  Countless residential treatment facilities began denying him admission due to aggression and elopement risk (running away).

Our family has been navigating almost weekly crises for too long.  It has taken a toll on every household member, our health, our marriage, and our finances.  Carrying for a loved one with mental illness has impacted every area of our lives.  It became clearer and clearer to us that what was being offered to us by insurance, in-state providers, and law enforcement was not only NOT helping, but seemed to be making things worse.  Many times on this journey, we have felt completely hopeless.

Hopeless…until we found a therapeutic boarding school located on a Caribbean island that specializes in treating adolescents who have experienced early childhood trauma.  A large percentage of their student body are international adoptees like Emet who have been battling Reactive Attachment Disorder (RAD).  They offer a holistic brain-based approach and a staff trained by well-respected attachment specialist Nancy Thomas. This school was the first place to offer HOPE for Emet and his future!

Because we love Emet, believe healing IS possible, and trust God’s love for Emet and our entire family, we have enrolled Emet in this Christian therapeutic boarding school specialized in treating RAD.

Sending Emet to this therapeutic boarding school is a great financial commitment, but it is his best chance at healing and hope for a bright future.  If he had cancer, we would not hesitate to look for the best treatments even if they were costly or in other countries.  The school we have chosen to partner with in Emet’s healing is significantly less than any similar option in the States.

We transported him safely at the end of May 2024 and have received updates on his adjustment.  Honestly, we are feeling the weirdest mix of grief and relief right now.  Grief because we miss him and will feel a void in our home and family until he returns.  Relief because he is safe and we can now all focus on healing.

How can you help?

1. Pray for Emet and the rest of our family to experience physical, emotional & spiritual healing in the coming months.

2. Give to help provide Emet with high-quality post-adoption care.

Here’s a breakdown of Emet’s treatment expenses:

  • Enrollment Fee: $3,500 one-time
  • Tuition: $4,000 per month (includes room & board, therapies such as brain mapping & neurofeedback, 24/7 staff supervision, on-site 24/7 security)
  • Psychiatric Exams: TBD (out-of-network for insurance)
  • Medication: TBD (out-of-network for insurance)

Lifesong for Orphans graciously provided us with a direct grant of $5,000 to help us immediately enroll Emet in his long-term treatment program.  Additionally, Lifesong provides this platform at no cost to us for sharing Emet’s need and allowing friends and family to make tax-deductible gifts.  Lifesong is even matching the first $10,000 donated on this platform!!

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.  It’s humbling to ask for help and to share such intimate details of our struggles, but our love compels us to set aside pride or risk of ridicule to do what we believe is best for our beloved son.

Love,

Brandon & Zanna

Two Months & Still So Thankful

July 29, 2024

Your gifts are making a difference!!

As mentioned in a previous update, Emet had a QEEG brain mapping scan upon admission.  He has been participating in regular neurofeedback sessions.  This passive treatment is meant to help improve his brain functioning so his therapy participation can be even more meaningful and productive.

In addition to daily therapy sessions and neurofeedback, Emet’s progress is also being monitored by a child psychiatrist with experience treating children and adolescents who have experienced trauma.  We have already been impressed by this doctor’s regular & thorough communication with us.  We have already had multiple video calls with him and get quick responses anytime we message him with a follow-up question.  This is so different than our experience with previous mental health providers.

We have weekly video chats with Emet and exchange letters regularly.  We have already been so encouraged by the healing we can physically see in his face.  We continue to be so thankful that Emet has this opportunity to be treated in a safe, secure environment.

It’s hard to think about how many nights we feared for his life this past year.  We are still very much in the thick of processing the trauma of the last year, helping our younger children make sense of all this, and being intentional about healing areas that took significant hits while we were in survival mode.  By God’s grace, Emet is safe and in treatment.  By God’s grace, we have hope.

Thanks for believing with us that healing and hope are possible for Emet and for giving so generously towards his treatment.  We love you.

Send Emet a Birthday Gift

July 8, 2024

When Emet was five years old and had been home for several months, we decided to enroll him in a small Christian preschool in the area where we lived.  Like most preschools, Emet often came home with drawings, crafts, or funny questionnaires completed in the teacher’s handwriting.  I loved those little surprises at pick-up.

One day at pick-up, I was handed a small paper balloon from a bulletin board display of things the students wanted to thank God for.  Emet’s balloon read: “Giving me my birthday.”

He was referring to his 5th birthday celebration a few months earlier.  Not only was his 5th birthday his first in our family, it was also his first birthday celebration ever.

As Westerners, we can sometimes forget that holiday celebrations look much different in other parts of the world.  Emet was born in a very rural part of a developing country.  His early years were marked by malnourishment and hardship, not party balloons and streamers.

The night before Emet’s fifth birthday, I baked and decorated a monster truck-themed cake.  Baking my kids’ cakes the night before birthdays has become a beloved tradition.  Brandon & I excitedly prepared his presents which included his first bicycle.  The day was fairly low-key by American standards as we thoughtfully introduced new experiences during his first year home, but it was a sweet day filled with family and a few close friends. I treasure those memories.

This week, we are preparing our hearts for Emet’s sixteenth birthday.

It looks nothing like we could have ever imagined.  It is painful and our hearts are hurting over what mental illness has stolen and continues to steal from Emet and our lives.  Oh, how I wish we were scheduling driver’s exams at the DMV or doing any “normal” teenage things besides this!

There were times during the last year we feared for Emet’s life.  It was terrifying and we are still working through the trauma those events caused.  We thank the Lord for His divine protection. This week holds both hurt and hope.  We hurt missing our boy.  It hurts to send your child to another country to heal.   And we also have hope.  Emet is safe and getting the treatment he needs through an excellent psychiatrist, neurofeedback to heal his brain, regular therapy, a nutrient-rich healthy diet, 24/7 supervision for his safety, and so much more.  We have hope for all the birthdays we will get with Emet in the future.  Hope for healing.

Lifesong has graciously offered our family a matching grant of $10,000.  We are touched by the generosity of our community which has already raised $3,175 towards that goal. Seriously…we can’t tell you what that means to us. We are still trying to get out from under the expenses of his multiple hospitalizations over the last year, so these gifts allowed us to pay his current treatment costs.

For Emet’s birthday, would you consider a financial gift to help him continue receiving mental health treatment?

Lifesong will match dollar for dollar up to $10,000 and we are almost halfway to that goal!  What if we could get to that $10,000 this week in honor of Emet’s 16th birthday?  That would secure his treatment for the next several months.  What a gift that would be to him!

Grief + Relief

June 23, 2024

Thank you for the compassion and grace shown to our family recently.  Sending our son to another country to heal is something we could have never imagined, but we feel confident this is his best chance at healing.  At the same time, we are currently experiencing the weirdest feelings of grief and relief.

The grief is real.  We are painfully aware of the person missing from our dining table, our home, and our daily lives.  We are grieving Emet’s absence, the pain we’ve walked through, the brokenness of our world, the way the system failed, the dreams we imagined, and more that we are still unpacking.  Grief comes in waves sometimes triggered by the smallest thing.  We are patiently working through this and trusting God will be near in our grief.

We can’t help but also notice the relief we feel now that Emet is safe and in a long-term treatment program rather than bouncing in and out of short-term placements.  Our home feels more peaceful as we are not living in a state of constant high alert.  Our nervous systems are recalibrating.  We are sleeping better. Like grief, relief seems to come in waves, washing over us and bringing healing where we need it.

We feel relief knowing Emet is getting quality care tailored to his needs.  We received his initial brain mapping scans this week and they provided fascinating insight into how early childhood trauma impacted his brain.  More importantly, it gives the team a path forward as Emet will begin regular neurofeedback therapy to help improve his brain functioning.  We are hopeful for him to start healing from the inside out and sharing this brain scan image feels like an important part of destigmatizing mental illness.

Thank you for praying for Emet as he begins neurofeedback therapy and continues to adjust to the residential treatment facility.  We also appreciate your prayers for our household as we walk through this transition.
