Help and Healing for the Smith Family

Melanie Smith
Melanie Smith Bremen, Georgia

Dear Friends and Family,

We’re Eric and Melanie, and we’ve been married for fifteen years. Over that time, God has blessed us with three incredible children—through both adoption and biological birth. Each homecoming was nothing short of a miracle, and in just three years, we went from zero to three kids!

Our oldest, Storm, came home to us at the age of five. He was the first to grow in our hearts and make us parents. Before joining our family, Storm spent a year in foster care and endured significant trauma, abuse, and neglect. These early experiences have deeply affected his development over the years.

Now 14, Storm is beginning to truly confront and process the pain of his past through counseling. He has been in therapy in some form since he was about five or six, but the challenges of adolescence, combined with his trauma, have intensified his emotional and mental health struggles. Over the past year, these challenges escalated to self-harm, suicide attempts, concerns for the safety of others among other things. Within one month, he was admitted to three different mental health facilities.

After many tears, prayers, and hard conversations, we made the painful but necessary decision to place Storm in a long-term residential treatment center—for his safety, for our family’s well-being, and to give him the best chance at healing. He’ll need to be there for at least a year. Thankfully, it’s a faith-based facility, which brings us comfort—but it’s also entirely private pay.

We’re facing an expected out-of-pocket cost of $70,000 to $100,000 or more. While we’re committed to doing whatever it takes to support Storm and our family, we can’t do this alone. We are humbly asking for help—whether through financial support or continued prayers. We have been awarded a $6000 matching grant from LifeSong for Orphans Adoption Fund, so whatever is donated here will be matched. Every bit makes a difference, and we are so grateful for your love and encouragement during this difficult journey. To God be the glory, for He is our hope!

With heartfelt thanks,

Eric & Melanie

4 Month Update

October 29, 2025

Hey Everyone! We are in our 4th month of Storms healing and his stay in a long term treatment care. It honestly feels much longer than that as the days with out him home have been hard. It’s definitely taken a toll on me (Melanie) as a mom and as a person, same goes for Eric and especially hard for my littles at home. They don’t understand why their brother can’t be home with them. We can explain as best we know how, but at the end of the day, it’s just plain hard!

With the Holidays looming it’s been especially hard to think of them without him. There is where we have some Good News! For both Thanksgiving and Christmas, we are getting to spend 3 days total with him near where he is at. Getting him the day before each Holiday, day of, and day after. This will also include our younger two for the first time since he’s been gone! Other than letters to and from Storm, they have not spoken to or seen him. We are beyond excited and my mama heart can’t get enough! While it may look different, not being in our home, and not being with extended family it will be difficult but we will at least be together as the Smith family of 5 and that’s more than I could have asked for.

Storm overall is doing better, still a lot to get through behaviorally and mentally, but he’s making great strides, for that we Praise the Lord! In our last visit with him, just Eric and I, I saw a difference in Storm. A more mature and selfless guy. He cleaned the kitchen where we were staying unprompted, and I was pleasantly surprised with the quality and iniative. Small things like that make the world of difference to us, it’s not ground breaking, ok well maybe a little, but it’s all working as it should.

I am starting to feel the tides shift in our family, at home and with our situation with Storm. There seems to be more peace for my personally, in our marriage, in our parenting, and in our other two children. There is still a hole where Storm isn’t at home physically but I can feel the Lord’s hand guiding us and taking care of us and with that I can rest easy knowing our Savior has it all under control!

Thank you for all your prayers and help during this turbulent time in our family! We are so thankful for all of our friends and family who have rallied around us during this time! Until next time.

Hats for Sale and Our first Visit with Storm

September 16, 2025

Good Afternoon everyone! We are selling Hats for Storm and helping reduce costs for his recovery. We receive half the proceeds of each hat ordered! We coined a phrase in relation to Storms name and it also goes along with a great Bible verse, Deuteronomy 31:6. They are great looking hats, for orders text myself 678-787-3728 or my dear friend Amy whose number is on the flyer.

Ok, now that I have my spill about our hats for sale, let me update you on our first visit with Storm! We traveled down a couple of wekeends ago and were able to spend a Saturday and Sunday with Storm. Just for several hours each day. It has been 2 1/2 months since we saw him last in person, so it was a bitter sweet reunion. It was also his birthday weekend, so as per his request we went had a beach day on Saturday. It was very relaxing and great to just spend one on one time with him. He’s doing well, and should be upgrading to his new shirt color/level. This next level grants him the privilege to talk with our other two children, choose his own haircut,  have a few more items from home that were sent down originally, and some other things he’s excited about.

It’s been very hard on the home front for the littles not having the opportunity to talk with Storm. It’s the longest time frame for all of us where we are unable to see, or speak to Storm. They are expressing their sadness and frustration in various ways. It has been very hard to manage and help from an emotional state.

Back to the visit with Storm for Eric and . On Sunday we went to a local park with a body of water and played a board game he had just gotten from us for his birthday. Another peaceful day with him, just getting to talk and have individual attention from us. Taking him back to his long term stay place was very hard on us again, emotionally. It is not a natural thing to drop your kid off and just leave them. Atleast not at this stage in my life. Tears were shed, prayers were prayed but we got through it.

Overall, storm is progressing in the right direction. Thank you all for your prayers, support, and kindness! Until next time!
~Melanie

Storms Progress

August 8, 2025

Hello Everyone! We want to first Thank everyone for their generosity. What a blessing y’all have been either through prayers, support, or just being there for our family, it has meant so much to us.

It has been a long month in a half with Storm gone from our home. He has had some bumps in the road while there, in the long term treatment facility, but is on a path to healing. Eric and I hopefully get to visit him next month, will be the first time seeing him since June. The seperation has been taxing on our family, especially with our younger two. While they understand he needs help and is happy he is getting the help he needs, they miss their big brother.

We ofcourse need continued prayers as we navigate this hard time on so many fronts. Again, thank you to everyone for your love and kindness.
God Bless

The Smiths
