This is a story of a boy…

Jeffrey Bergquist Maryville, Tennessee

Dear Family and Friends,

We are so excited about continuing the process of adoption for Josiah! As many of you know, this has been a long process. On 12/20/16, Jeff’s nurse, Kelli, came down the hall and said to Jeff, “Uh, there is a lady at the counter asking if you would want to take her baby home”. Jeff quickly realized it was the director of Safe Families for Children.  SFFC is a ministry that connects host families and churches to families experiencing difficult situations, to care for their children for short periods of time. Josiah came to us when he was 2 months old, as an early Christmas blessing. It was expected to be a short hosting but it was later discovered that the mother’s circumstances were much more significant, including drug addiction and mental disability. The father is in jail and in a situation that Josiah could never return. Josiah struggles with Sensory Integration Disorder, speech and motor delays due to intrauterine drug exposure. He has been in OT, PT, and Speech Therapy; yet, he is thriving, growing, and overcoming these difficulties. Josiah has 5 joyful sisters that love, care for, and challenge him. He adores them.
This forever adoption is an unexpected blessing and a gracious gift of God to our family. As we continue to see this story God is writing in our lives, we are amazed at how God takes our disappointments and brings great joys, answers to prayer, and provides in amazing ways.

The beauty of adoption in this life is but a shadow of the amazing picture of adoption into the Family of God Almighty. He takes us, who were his enemies, strangers, aliens, and dead in our sin. He makes us his friend, sons and daughters of God, brothers to Jesus, robed in His righteousness, and a part of His forever family, feasting at His eternal table. Our prayer is that this earthly adoption will be used by God to bring Josiah into the family of God forever. Josiah has been given a new identity coming into our family. We have given him the name of Josiah David (Yahweh supports; Yahweh heals; Beloved). We sense these words capture the way God loves Josiah and as we desire to love him as well.

It is hard to determine the total cost of our adoption of Josiah. Our total thus far, has been over $12,500 but God has provided miraculously. Recently, thankfully, we have been awarded an Adoption Matching Grant of $2,500 from Lookout for Orphans Adoption Fund administered through Lifesong for Orphans, which is a non-profit Christian ministry dedicated to help meet the needs of orphaned children around the world.  All funds donated to Lifesong for Orphans, on our behalf, will be given to help cover our continuing adoption expenses. Lifesong is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization and your gift is tax deductible. 100% of all funds raised will go directly to cover our adoption costs–nothing will be taken out for Lifesong for Orphans administrative costs.

The roller coaster continues

August 28, 2018

We received termination of biological rights of mother this morning but not from the bio father.  He is a violent sex offender against children and still in jail, but had scribbled a letter a few months ago asking for more time.  The court appointed him a lawyer today (even though he already had a lawyer visit him and our lawyer had requested one for him back in June). We now have to wait 30 days for his response. We are thankful they put a time limit on it. We are hoping that he will be willing to surrender and not contest. Sept 25 we go back to court for his termination. As long as he is willing to surrender, we can adopt 30 days after that. If he contests, we will have to go to trial against him and that could be an ordeal. We are very disappointed and angry at today’s outcome. Please pray for our hearts. We are struggling.

God continues to show us his faithfulness, our utter dependence upon him, and the great joy that He has in bringing His plan about in His timing. He has always done great things for us in the past, we can trust that He will continue to do so.  He is faithful, just, and good when the world is not.  He is strong when we are weak.

Adoption court date!

August 22, 2018

We are excited about our upcoming court date 8/28/18.  Our lawyer has petitioned for a final decision on termination and adoption to be made on 8/28.  We are praying for favor from the judge.  This could potentially be the last court date.  This has been a long process with many up’s and down’s, but we are hopeful the end of this part of our adoption journey will be over.  Please pray for Josiah’s parents, both of whom are in difficult places because of their sinful choices.  Pray the Spirit of God would bring salvation to them and that they would experience repentanc, and the love, grace, forgiveness, and healing that only God can bring to their desperate hearts.  Pray for Josiah, that he would grow into a strong, loving, tender hearted man of God.

Physical Therapy graduation day!

May 24, 2018

Josiah continues to excel, and today he got his graduation from physical therapy!  Amy (above pic) has been a wonderful therapist and we are so grateful.  Due to his sensory issues, at 9 months he would hardly allow the bottoms of his feet to touch the ground, but over the last 7 months he has gone from bouncing on his feet in the swing, to standing; at 12 months started to bear some weight, and with the help of braces, started walking at 17 months, and now he is on the move without his braces!  We are praising God for his progress.
