Not everyone is called to adopt

David and Christi Gould

“No matter how large, your vision is too small.” Thomas Chalmers said that. And our Pastor has it on a bulletin or handout often … so it’s been before us on a regular basis for over 10 years. It’s easy to dismiss as it’s become so familiar but it’s a reminder of how little we are and how big our God is .. that He can do anything through us and with us if we let Him work.

David and I love our big family. And we are blessed with six amazing children. But the Lord spoke to our hearts, individually, that our family wasn’t complete. And our son Tate started asking, again, if he could have another brother with Down syndrome.

And I read Orphan Justice by Johnny Carr. My heart was convicted. And David was in agreement. We knew what God was calling us toWe believe in the value of all life. And we believe in and worship a big God. Our vision had been too small.

If Roe v. Wade is ever overturned, the foster care system will likely be flooded with special needs cases. Will we, as God’s people, be prepared to take care of the children who were not aborted, but then abandoned? If we claim to be “pro-life,” we must be willing to take an honest look at our attitudes toward children with disabilities. – Johnny Carr

Stepping out in faith, we completed a domestic home study this spring, asking friends, family and our pastor to pray for us that we would submit our family to His will.

Last week, we got a call that there was a newborn baby boy with Down syndrome that needed a forever family. We packed our bags and met him the next day. Charlie is perfect – both an answer to our prayers as well as the prayers of his birth parents. He spent a week in the NICU, and we are waiting for the legal paperwork to be completed so we can bring him home.

Will you please join us on our journey? We covet your prayers. And we are thankful for any donation to help us offset the cost of bringing our son home. (Legal fees, adoption agency fees and travel totals about $12,000.)

Not everyone is called to adopt but we are all called to care for orphans.

To our God, taking care of orphans isn’t just a “great idea.” It’s critical. Why? Because every man, woman, boy, and girl—including orphaned and vulnerable children—has been created in God’s image and is precious to Him. – Johnny Carr

One Month Ago

July 6, 2017

One month ago today, I was coming home from my annual homeschool planning weekend. Three kids were at a camp. And I was mentally preparing a menu to feed six extra kids that week while our dear friends went out of town.

One month ago today, a mama gave birth to a sweet baby boy. She loved him enough to decide that the best thing for him would be to give him up for adoption.

Today she thanked us for being her son’s parents. And I thanked her for giving him life and trusting us to be his parents.

Only God. He orchestrates these stories, for our good and His glory.

“He chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love he predestined us for adoption as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will, to the praise of his glorious grace, with which he has blessed us in the Beloved.” Ephesians 1:4-6

Key Lime Pie

June 27, 2017

A dear Sister in Christ and friend posted a picture on Facebook of this key lime pie she made for her best friend. After all the comments about how delicious it looked, she decided to offer to make them for people … and the charge? A donation to our adoption fund. Humbled and overwhelmed again and again. She is loving orphans. Thank you, Joanna!

Parish Pres

June 25, 2017

It was such a JOY to introduce sweet Charlie to our church family today.

Parish Pres has been our church home since it was founded over 10 years ago. Nearly eight years ago, we welcomed our sweet Ian. Although his Down syndrome diagnosis was a surprise to us, we knew it wasn’t a surprise to God. He had a perfect plan for Ian’s place in our church and in prompting our hearts to adopt a child with Down syndrome.

A few hours after he was born, our dear Pastor Grant came to pray with us and encourage us. He told us that just the day before during Sunday worship they prayed for the founding of a new ministry – Emmaus – to serve individuals with special needs. They prayed that God would bring those to serve. Little did they know that 24 hours later, God would answer that prayer. Several volunteers serve on a team to minister to Ian and two other friends with special needs.

Our Parish family has faithfully loved our family through the hard seasons with Ian’s hospital stays – they pray, bring meals, and watch kids. They check-in on us when we haven’t been at worship for weeks because of illness. They warmly welcomed Isaac two years ago. They prayed with us as we felt the call to adopt again. And today they REJOICED over Charlie!

I cannot imagine life without our church family. They have been Christ to us.

Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it. 1 Cor. 12:27

Charlie’s Home

June 22, 2017

We met our son when he was just 48 hours old. He spent a week in the NICU for jaundice and feeding issues. But his heart and his muscle tone look great, often challenges for children born with Down syndrome. We had to stay three more days at the hotel while legal paperwork finished. We brought him home last Friday. A JOY! He is loved and cherished! We cannot wait to see what God has in store for our family and sweet Charlie’s life!
