The Bakers are adopting! We were married on June 3, 2012. We dreamed of beginning a life together and raising a family in the Lord. Our first few years of marriage went great. Though we greatly wanted a family, we were okay that we were not able to conceive just yet. Early in marriage it was easy to wait on the Lord’s timing for a family. We pressed on growing in loving and getting to know each other and laying down our lives for our local body of believers.
As time continued on, and a few years turned into more than 7 years, it became harder to wait. Deep down we continued to believe that children come from God, but we were struggling. At first it was friends who got married around us that were having kids, then it became friends who got married well after us who were having kids. We couldn’t help but ask, “Why not us?”
We knew the Lord had a plan, and we had to stay committed to prayer and wait for his timing. From day one of our marriage, we have always been open to foster care and adoption, but we knew if we were going to pursue either of these it would be in His timing. Though at times we wanted to jump in quickly, we knew we must wait on Him, so we waited on the Lord.
During the waiting, God has been able to use this time in so many ways and has been so gracious to us. This time has allowed us to labor deeply with our community in church. We have committed to pour our lives into people. Whether we have kids or not, we want to be committed to raising spiritual children, and God has blessed us with an amazing church family to serve alongside.
But this past year we have felt a change. After so many years of waiting in prayer, we have felt the Lord leading us to move toward becoming parents. The past year has been spent seeking Him to see what that would look like, whether adoption or foster-care. No matter its form, we want to provide a loving home for a child to grow up in. After much prayer and receiving much counsel, we have decided to move forward at this point in time with adoption and a future open heart to foster care.
We could not be more excited! Not only do we know that adoption is close to the heart of God, as we ourselves have been adopted by God, but it’s close to us personally, as Ashley has been adopted by her father. We cannot wait to see what the Lord has for us in this journey, and no matter what happens we will trust in Him.
For the past few months, we have been working with Lutheran Family Service to help make this adoption a reality. After passing our homestudy and being accepted into their program, we are now able to officially move forward with the adoption process. We covet your prayers during this next season of our lives.
