The Tam Family Adoption

Hello Family and Friends,

Thank you for stopping by to learn more about our adoption story!

Our journey towards adoption officially began two years ago, however, God began stirring our hearts towards adopting several years earlier.  Josephine’s grandmother “MaMa” passed away in 2018, after living with us for almost 13 years. That experience of living with and caring for MaMa taught us so many lessons as a family.  And while we didn’t know it, God was also using that experience to prepare our family for this journey of adopting, and His call to care for both the orphans and widows (James 1:27).

The truth is that our entire family was not convicted to adopt initially. During the early shutdown stage of the global pandemic, God changed each of our hearts one-by-one, reminding us in different ways of the abundance of His blessings in our home and family.  Over time, we experienced confirmation of God’s call to pursue adoption as a family.

We felt led to adopt our own kinsmen, and were excited to discover that Hong Kong was an option as both of our parents immigrated from there.   After lots of paperwork, medical forms, home study visits, training, and waiting, we were officially matched with a little girl on April 12th!  This date holds special significance for our family as it was also the same day that Josephine’s dad passed away seven years ago.  So now, it will be remembered for loss AND the addition of life in our family!

Our little one was born in April 2020 and has been living in an orphanage since birth.  The name we have chosen for her is “Joyce” (of course it had to be a “J” name!)  We chose this name because we “rejoice” in God’s goodness that she will be part of our family soon.  Her Chinese name will be “Bo-Yan” which means “precious or treasured grace” to remind us of God’s grace to us.

We are currently in the final stage of the paperwork process, which is waiting for the high court order from the Hong Kong government.  Travel to Hong Kong is projected to happen this fall.  Our hope is for our whole family to travel together to meet and bring Joyce home, as well as to learn more about her current home and country.

We would be honored if you would partner with us on this journey.  Here are two ways you can do that:

First and foremost, we covet your prayers.

While adoption is a joyful occasion, it is also a story of grief and loss.  Pray for little Joyce that she would experience God’s peace and comfort when it comes time to leave the only home she has known.  Pray for a smooth transition and her attachment to our family.  Pray that God would prepare our family to love and receive Joyce.

Pray for good health for Joyce and our family before and during travel.  For wisdom to know how to address Joyce’s health issues and special needs when we arrive home.

Pray that we would trust God in the timing and details of the waiting, travel, and the unknowns of our future, knowing that He who calls is faithful (1 Thessalonians 5:24).  Pray specifically for God’s mercy and provision in the travel logistics as plans cannot be made in advance, and Hong Kong currently requires a seven-day quarantine upon arrival.

Not everyone is called to adopt, but many have a heart for adoption.  As you may know, adoption is costly.  The total cost for our adoption will be around $50,000 to $55,000, which includes our home study, adoption agency, and government processing fees, as well as rising costs to travel to Hong Kong.  If you feel led to financially contribute towards our adoption, you can do so by following the instructions below.  We are grateful for Lifesong for Orphans, which enables 100% of your contribution to be tax-deductible and go directly towards our adoption.

We will try to post updates on this website as they arise. We would love to hear how you’re doing too. Thank you so much for your love, prayers, and support as we say “yes” to God’s invitation to adopt!

With Love,
Jason and Josephine
