Hi! We are the Sherron family from Rougemont, NC. We have four kids…Caleb, Emily, Aija and Brooke. If you are wondering about our middle daughter’s name, it’s Latvian. Aija became part of our family through adoption. We never talked about adoption when our three bio kids came along, but God turned our world upside down when a friend told us about a hosting program for orphans from Latvia and Ukraine. It struck a chord in our hearts and we just knew this was something God was calling us to do. Our family and friends know our story, but others recently joining our journey may not. The short story is, Aija had lived in an orphanage from the age of 3. We met and hosted her when she was 12. It was Christmas of 2013, and we fell in love with this sweet, funny, young girl in just a few short weeks. We soon knew in our hearts that God was telling us she needed to be a part of our family. She’s been with us for almost five years now, and we can’t imagine our family without Aija.
Fast forward to 2019. Orphan care has become something our family is passionate about. We have hosted orphans in our home several times now, but this past Christmas when we hosted a sweet brother and sister from another orphanage in an Eastern European country, God whispered to our hearts once again. Go after them. They need a family. They need your family. This brother and sister have been in an orphanage most of their young lives. They are 12 and 13 years old now. We are certain they have missed out on much. That’s a lot of years without parents, without the love of family. In spite of it all, they are kind, funny, and they make us all laugh. They fit right in with our kids and our extended family as well. It’s like they just belong.
So, here we are again in the midst of the adoption process. If you had asked us five years ago to tell you what we thought about hosting and adoption, there’s no way we could have prepared ourselves for what was to come. It's been a crazy ride, and God has turned our world upside down in the best way. We've witnessed the beauty and the brokenness of adoption. Even in the chaos, God gives us peace in knowing that through it all He has a plan. We’ve had heartbreak and happiness, but the joy we have found in following where God leads is immeasurable. It’s why we are doing this all over again. We could have never fully prepared ourselves for the emotions and experiences of adoption, but we fully believe God has called us to this. He brings beauty from ashes, and we have been blessed with a front row seat to watch God move mountains on behalf of the orphan. Adoption has changed our family in the most beautiful way. We are not the same, and we are so grateful. Once you have looked into the eyes of a child needing love, needing a family, needing someone to meet their most basic needs…once you have hugged them and held them close, you can never again ignore the orphan. It changes everything. God says go. Be my hands and feet. Take care of the fatherless. With a bit of fear and uncertainty, we said…ok God. He calls us to live by faith not by sight (II Corinthians 5:7) We are putting our hope and faith in Him, and adding to our family again.
What about the cost? We have considered the cost, the time, the effort – local, state and federal background checks, countless documents notarized and apostilled, social worker visits to compile our home study, mountains of paperwork…and yes – the money. To that we would say – it is all worth it because the lives of these two orphans are precious and they matter. They are God’s beautiful treasures and we are blessed He called us to be their family. We would greatly appreciate your prayers as we take this step of faith and pursue their adoption. The paperwork is complete on our end, and our Dossier has been submitted to Latvia. We are now in the equally difficult season of waiting. The adoption will cost about $38,000. That’s a lot, but we know God is able to provide! If you would like to join us on our journey, we would be so grateful. All donations are tax deductible. We are so very thankful for your prayers and for taking the time to read our story.
