Noah’s Colombia Adoption Journey

Our family had always talked of adoption. Our kids especially had asked us numerous times to consider adoption when they were younger. But as a husband and wife we never seemed to be in agreement on the timing. A couple of summers ago I read Steven Curtis Chapman’s book Between Heaven & the Real World and really started praying about the possibility of adoption. His book was so inspiring even through many tears. Our kids were getting older and I kept asking the Lord what He had next for us to do. Last fall my husband’s small group leader shared their family’s story of adoption and we were both amazed at how God had worked to bring them 2 little ones. I asked the Lord to do it for us. The Lord was working in my husband too and he also read Steven Curtis Chapman’s book while on a business trip and we continued to pray. By July God dropped a young boy in our path. I remember hearing his age and thinking a 12 year old boy would fit perfectly in our family! We got to spend 10 days with him through a Colombian hosting program. To see and to touch and to get to know a child that needs a home made a huge impact on us that we said “Yes, Lord! We will start this process and we’ll trust you to lead the way if this is the child you want for us.” We didn’t fully understand any of the process or cost at that time we said yes but the desire and God’s leading were so strong that we just knew this was the next thing God wanted for our family! He has confirmed this time and time again. 2 of my kids and I joined a Community Bible Study program this fall. They have a Spanish speaking class so we are learning the language and culture through many sweet Latin American ladies. We are studying the book of Isaiah and in the 1st chapter of Isaiah in verse 17 it says, “Learn to do right; seek justice. defend the oppressed. Take up the cause of the fatherless; plead the case of the widow.” This verse brought tears to my eyes and was another confirmation for our family to adopt and take up the cause of the fatherless!

The Lord is teaching us in so many new ways to trust Him. We can’t rush this process or finagle a way to get things done any quicker. Over the last couple of weeks we’re seeing the global impacts of COVID-19. The processes have slowed even more as everyone is reacting and coping with this virus and there are even more uncertainties of the timing than before. We feel frantic at times. We learned our son who is waiting in Colombia for us was placed into a new foster home and enrolled in a new school. His social worker said he seems anxious. It’s at these times the Lord brings to mind Proverbs 3:5 that says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding”. We don’t understand why this is taking so long or why he was moved but we trust the Lord with all our heart that His timing is perfect! And so we continue on slow and steady! Trusting the the One who knows and sees our son to provide and protect him.

We have recently been awarded a $3,500 matching grant from We Care for Orphans Adoption Fund, administered by Lifesong for Orphans. Every gift given online or by check, will be matched up to $3,500!! As we progress with fundraising, we praise God for his goodness and continued faithfulness. We are unsure of how much time remains in this process nor do we know how long we will be required to stay in Colombia. Despite these uncertainties, we appreciate your support in this journey. Please continue to pray with us as we prepare to travel and bring our son home.
