Luna Mei

Emily Rancourt Bristow, Virginia

It was a cold and gloomy December day when the news came from China. Just like that – she was gone. Almost two years of hoping, praying, and advocating for China to prepare her file and suddenly we were faced with the reality that Luna would never be coming to our home. Love Without Boundaries (an international charity) fought for our sweet girl, and she was known by name – Luna the Lionhearted. But even after open heart surgery, her broken heart never recovered and she required supplemental oxygen 24/7. After months of being in the hospital fighting for her life Luna was able to be released, but her orphanage was unable to take her there on oxygen. My sister Meredith (Mei) runs a foster home in China for babies with severe heart defects – several texts and emails later she coordinated for our baby girl to be transferred to Beijing. For almost a year Luna lived in Meredith’s Little House of Brave – cherished and Dearly Loved.

The night of what would have been Luna’s 3rd birthday my phone blew up with texts messages from Meredith while I was asleep. “I just received the file of a baby girl and I think she is meant to be yours. So much like Luna 😭”. I somehow waited until after Jacques finished preaching that Sunday to share this news with him. Our plates were full and overflowing with the six kids we already have, and adding one more at that point in time sounded insane. I’m not sure that Jacques actually said yes, but he did say, “Emily, I think this is a terrible idea. But if you feel so strongly that this is what we are supposed to do, to bring this baby girl home, then I’m on board.”  My heart and head disagreed, but I knew that familiar tug – a nagging ache in my chest from the Holy Spirit that would not go away until I emailed our Adoption agency with our Letter of Intent to adopt Jia Ni.

Last summer China implemented some new rules that actually prohibit our family from adopting from there anymore. The new rules allow a family to only have five children at home, and none of those children can be under age three – but Luna. Luna paved a path. Luna made a way where there was no way for one more baby to make it out of China and into our family. We already had a dossier logged into China waiting at the ready to bring home Luna, and because of that China grandfathered us in and granted the permission we needed to bring home NiNi. We received that permission in just 12 hours after submitting the paperwork, and much to our surprise, within two days our Letter Seeking Confirmation (also known as a LOA) showed up at our adoption agency. China said yes – and they were expediting her case due to her life threatening heart condition.

In order to honor the special little one who literally made this adoption possible, we have decided to name NiNi – Luna Mei.  Her middle name “Mei” is after my sister Meredith who is a Defender of Hope, and one of my heroes!  Mei risks everything to love her babies with extremely broken hearts.  She clings to hope especially when the outlook is bleak.  She fights for their lives in a culture that only sees them as orphans, and she has changed the dialogue so much that the surgeons no longer question but instead fight alongside her – in hope.  Mei supported me through all of Lily’s open heart surgeries.  She lived with me at the hospital, and held me as I crumbled into a heap on the floor after one of Lily’s multiple code blues.  Mei has allowed me to {virtually} stand beside her on holy ground while she has cradled her babies lifeless bodies.  Likewise she has allowed me to share in her joy when a new baby learns what it means to be loved and smiles for the first time! We have cried together, prayed together, and always chosen hope together.  Our dream is that Luna Mei will continue to be brave and hope filled just like her Aunt Mei.

I have been diligently filling out piles of paperwork, and applying to grants in order to cover the funds that we lack. Like many adoptive families, we made the decision to adopt knowing we couldn’t afford to. However, when we prayed to God and asked Him if now was the right time to adopt again, we never interpreted our lack of money as a “No” from God, but as a call to trust Him. And we have seen God working already. With three of our adopted children coming to us from the China Special Focus Program (special needs), our medical bills over the past five and a half years have been incomprehensible. Even with excellent health insurance, our deductibles, Out of Pocket, and co-pays are hefty. Our daughter Lily’s post heart transplant medications alone cost us about $500/month. Yet, God has always provided. We have had the opportunity to see God’s fingerprints all over each of our adoptions, and we are hoping that YOU will be one of those ways that He will choose to bless us!

We are thrilled that our family has been awarded a $4,500 matching grant, funded by Chosen and Dearly Loved Foundation -administered by Lifesong for Orphans.  This amazing foundation will match your donation dollar for dollar, providing us with $9,000 to bring our daughter home. This means that if you donate $25 it becomes $50, and if you donate $100 it becomes $200. THANK YOU for your generous giving and for all the many ways you have come alongside our family!
