Love Has No Borders: Traxels Adopting from the Dominican Republic

Jesus said, “I will not leave you as orphans. I will come to you” (John 14:18).

We are Joshua and Abby Traxel and we have been married for seven years. We have an amazing four-year-old biological daughter.

Our journey towards adoption started before we were even married. As we discussed the possibility of having a family in the future, we both shared an affinity for the idea of adoption and agreed that it might be something to pursue in the future  - regardless of our ability to have biological child(ren) or not.

In the fall of 2019 God began to lead us towards adoption.  Our decision to pursue adoption at this particular time was sparked by secondary infertility. About two years or so after the birth of our daughter, we tried to have another child. As time went on, still with no child, we decided not to pursue specific causes of the infertility, and focus our time and resources on adoption. We ran into one specific obstacle: funding. As we were wrestling with the realization of how expensive an adoption would be, God began to open doors through some tremendously generous people. This led us to realize that God’s plan was for us to adopt now.

After considering many options, including a domestic adoption and foster care, we decided to pursue an adoption from the Dominican Republic. This decision was fueled by our deep love for Dominican culture, our church body’s strong mission presence in the D.R., and the fact that we are in a position to manage some of the challenges unique to adoption from the Dominican Republic.

Much like when we were pregnant with our biological daughter and we did not find out her gender until birth, we are waiting to be matched with either a boy or girl, including the possibility of adopting a sibling set.

It is only through the generosity of God’s people that we are able to pursue this adoption. If you feel led, would you consider helping us financially? We have been blessed to receive a matching grant, sponsored by Lutherans for Life, in which every dollar contributed will be matched, up to $3,000. We are deeply appreciative of your support and prayers.
