Before Mason and I met, we individually desired to adopt. We even talked about it on our second date. After we married in 2016, we prayed that God would grow our family biologically, and planned to pursue adoption down the road. As the months of excitement achingly stretched into three years of grief, our arms remained empty. We were open to starting the process to foster or adopt, but we were stuck in an agonizing waiting pattern.
In the spring of 2020 we heard several stories of people who had things “fall into their laps”; or in other words they experienced an answer to prayer in an unexpected way. We started praying that if there was something we weren’t considering to build our family, that God would make it clear to us.
Where it all began
In July 2020, on a road trip to my grandmother’s funeral, I scrolled on social media to ease my boredom. I came across a picture with four little faces with hearts over them. I skimmed the caption about a sibling group needing a home. And I kept scrolling.
The next day, stuck in mountain traffic with no air conditioning on the way home, I remembered those four little faces. I found the post and studied it more closely. I read the caption again. “These siblings have a very strong bond”. It went on to explain that they had a difficult past and needed a family. The seed was planted in my heart. I prayed the rest of the way home, and as we sat down to dinner late that night at home, I pulled up the post and showed it to Mason. “Yes, ask for more information,” he responded. I sent an email that very night.
Several emails and phone calls later, we said yes to applying to Lifeline Children’s Services, a domestic and international adoption agency. We said yes to pursuing these beautiful children from Brazil. Within a week we went from a holding pattern with no end in sight, to scrambling to prepare mounds of paperwork. We replaced my janky twelve-year-old printer to handle the load of scanning and printing. We signed. We sent emails. We filled out forms. We read. And we prayed.
We also discovered that the four children have a younger sibling. We desire to adopt him as well, but are waiting to hear if that is possible. So that is five (yes FIVE) kids that we are praying God brings into our family!
There are no guarantees in adoption, and we are still waiting on approval from Brazil to adopt these siblings, so nothing is official until we are matched. All we’ve had to do is tell people that we started the adoption process and half the time someone responds with an adoption horror story. We hope to adopt and are pursuing these specific children, but we hold it loosely. Things could change quickly and our process will inevitably be delayed at some point. We trust that God has a plan to grow our family through adoption, so we are taking this one step at a time.
We need your help
Adoption is a very expensive process; the normal adoption costs for a single child from Brazil is approximately $40,000. Adopting five children at once only adds to the expense, as many fees must be paid per child. We are raising funds to pay for agency fees, immigration and legal fees, and travel expenses. In addition, we will have many costs incidental to the adoption, such as purchasing a vehicle that can accommodate seven people, medical needs for the children, and beds and furniture for five small children.
Our adoption slogan is “Love Moves Mountains”. We are over the moon excited, but also mindful of the challenges that lie ahead. We are encouraged by Matt. 17:20. Jesus said, “For truly, I say to you, if you have faith like a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there”, and it will move, and nothing will be impossible for you”. Nothing is impossible for our God!
We would be honored and humbled if you chose to invest in our family and help bring these precious kids home. We are so thankful to have been awarded a $2500 matching grant from our church, Redemption Hill Baptist Church, administered by Lifesong for Orphans. We were blown away by the amazing generosity of these donors. If you give, your gift will be matched dollar for dollar, up to $2500. We hope to raise a total of $10,000, through this grant, fundraising, and more.
