LET’S BRING SAVANNAH HOME!

Jorge & Jen Uriostegui Wheaton, Illinois

Let’s bring Savannah Hope, Hiu-Sze, HOME!

We’re excited to share we received a $4,000 matching grant award from Glen Ellyn Bible Church, which is administered by Lifesong for Orphans. Now every donation we receive will be matched up to $4,000!  This wonderful news comes at a perfect time since we have diligently been working on many of the next steps in our adoption process.  We’ve been busy preparing our Dossier for Hong Kong’s review and final approval to adopt Savannah! We are passionately and persistently pursuing Savannah’s adoption, but the one hurdle in our way is money!  We have $20,000 in remaining adoption expenses and we URGENTLY need to raise $4,000 by October 31st for the dossier phase. Once we raise $4,000 Lifesong will match it!  This will help us cover some of the other upcoming adoption expenses and our $20,000 fundraising goal.

WE APPRECIATE YOUR SUPPORT IN THE PAST, BUT WE URGENTLY NEED HELP!

WILL YOU HELP US BRING SAVANNAH HOME?

Our adoption story…

If you’ve been following our journey all along, you may want to skip to updates tab below.

Dear Family and Friends,

We are adopting a precious young girl, Hiu-Sze, from Hong Kong! Her American name is “Savannah Hope”!  Savannah is 8 years old and will be turning 9 in January!  She has been living in a foster home for 6 years, but she desires to be adopted.  Savannah knows “a family” from the United States is pursuing her adoption.  She is looking forward to being part of her “forever family”; this will be a gift she has not had in her 8 years of life!  (Pictures and more details about this beautiful young girl will be shared when we have Hong Kong’s permission.)

A snapshot of our adoption history…Our journey of adoption has been a long road, and we trust we’re being guided by The Lord.  Before we met, we were both open to adopting and helping with the social injustice and suffering of an orphaned child.  We even discussed adoption during our courtship in 2008. That heart-seed has continued to grow throughout our 10 years of marriage!  Samuel also caught on to this vision quickly and has been eager to make a difference in the life of an orphaned child.  His heart has longed for a sibling for years, so he is elated about welcoming a sister into our family!  If he had his way, we’d be adopting 3 children!  We’ll start with 1 and see what God has planned!

When we lived in Texas in 2015, we began pursuing foster licensing so we could adopt a foster child.  However, as we progressed in the process, we sensed God was redirecting us to another adoption path. In mid-2016 we halted the foster licensing process, and took a season to pray and rest about adoption.  Yet the burden in our hearts to adopt did not lift.  After many discussions, lots of research about all types of adoptions, and keeping our decision in prayer, we finally had a unified peace to pursue an international adoption.  We felt a strong leading to adopt a young girl in Asia – either from Hong Kong or China. We researched agencies and started the preliminary process.  Then we had to put the adoption process on hold again due to our relocation to Illinois, our condo purchase and Jorge’s career change.  We now see this delay prepared us for adoption.  In December of 2017, we began the international adoption process.  We submitted our preliminary international adoption agency applications to Nightlight and it was approved.  Then we began our home study with ECFA in March of 2018.

Hiu-Sze is presented to us…Although we initially thought we’d adopt a girl between 2-5 years old, our home study agency suggested we increase our age limit since adoptions can take 1+ years to finalize.  We discussed it and increased the age to 7.  On May 4, 2018, we received a request from Nightlight.  They asked if we’d consider an 8-year old girl, with no identified special needs, except that she is older.  Many orphaned children are often overlooked as they get older, as well as children at any age with medical and/or special needs.  We agreed to pray about adopting Hiu-Sze and review her file.  We sought God’s wisdom and direction in prayer, reviewed her file, had a family meeting, and asked for the prayer and counsel of trusted advisors.  Samuel was completely on board and immediately said we should adopt Savannah even though she is almost 1 year older. He reminded us he had wanted to adopt an older sister!  Fairly quickly we all had a unified peace to pursue adopting Savannah Hiu-Sze!

Faithful Action Steps…We said yes to adopt Savannah!  Amazing how one simple 3-letter word like “YES!” requires so many action steps of faith.  Many times it felt like we were climbing a mountain, while trusting God for HIS will to be done in and through us!  Adoption is no small feat!  Countless hours have been spent on paperwork, emails, phone calls, background checks, medical appointments, legal documents and more. If you’re interested in milestone details, check out the “updates” on this site for a bullet list of adoption highlights and victories. Our patience, faith and perseverance are continually being refined in this process. This adoption journey is a frequent reminder of God’s love and relentless pursuit of us all!

We are excited and doing everything we can to adopt Savannah and be prepared to welcome her into our family. This entire process requires a tremendous amount of humility, vulnerability, time, financial resources and community support!  We are faithfully doing our part, but we cannot do it in our own strength. We desperately need God’s help to make this happen, and we humbly ask for the help of others to proceed with Savannah’s adoption!

How can you help?  As you may know, adoption costs can easily total up to $30,000 or more. Like many other adoptive families, we do not have the financial resources our adoption requires.  To date, we’ve paid about $10,000 in adoption expenses, through our resources and the generous gifts we received from a few family members and friends.  We are forever grateful for our loved ones who generously helped!  We have $20,000 in remaining adoption expenses and we URGENTLY need to raise $4,000 by October 31st for the Dossier phase.

1) Can you give a gift of any amount to help us bring Savannah home?

2) Will you commit to pray for us, especially Savannah and her entire adoption process?

3) Can you share our journey with others who may partner with us in prayer or giving?

Thank you for your love, prayers and support.  You are a special part of demonstrating God’s relentless love and pursuit for Savannah Hope, Hiu-Sze!  We are forever grateful!

James 1:27 – “Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.”

Waiting, Weary, Working & Wow’d!!!

November 30, 2019

Our apologies for not writing sooner. We’ve been encouraged by everyone who has reached out for an update. The adoption journey is challenging. We’ve been weary at times on our long road of waiting to bring Savannah home. BUT GOD has faithfully carried us through and encouraged us to keep moving forward!

While there has been a delay with the final phase of the matching approval in Hong Kong, we’re happy to hear Savannah is doing well! We received a few recent pictures and she is growing into a beautiful young girl.  She continues to excel in athletics; handball and running competitions. She also loves riding her bike and playing with Legos.

Several people have asked if the Hong Kong protests are hindering adoption.  We’ve been assured by Nightlight Christian Adoptions, our international adoption agency, the protests are not preventing adoptions. We know of a family who traveled a couple weeks ago to bring their son home, and another who will be traveling soon; both are reassuring. *Please pray for the people of Hong Kong, for their safety, God’s resolution to come forth, and to draw people to HIM!

We hope to receive an update regarding the final Hong Kong matching approval by the end of this year or early next year. *Pray we receive final HKCA matching approval soon!  We’ve been very busy actively working on pursuing Savannah’s adoption and have some wonderful updates to share…

Savannah saw our video and family picture, plus our family letter was translated to her!  We are so grateful! We also just sent her a picture of friends who adopted their daughter from China, along with a beautiful letter their daughter wrote Savannah, plus a letter I (Jen) wrote Savannah!  *Pray she will receive them soon and her heart will be touched deeply!

We received AMAZING encouragement through many generous people who initiated fundraisers on our behalf. Their efforts and sacrifices touched our hearts deeply! We’re moved to tears thinking about all the beautiful people who want to help bring Savannah home!!!

*Eureka Bible Church reached out to us by God’s leading to fundraise for our adoption. These precious brothers and sisters in Christ raised $5,057.00! We were in awe with how they were led by The Lord to reach out to us at a time when we were quite weary in our waiting!  God used them to lift us up and help us move forward We had the joy of preparing a video with our adoption journey for them, and we also drove to Eureka, Illinois to personally share our adoption journey with their congregation. We are forever grateful for this loving group of generous people!

*Our friend, Tammy Bruce Edwards, of streamtutoring.com offered to host a Physics Class Fundraiser to help bring Samuel’s sister, Savannah, home! We were deeply touched by Tammy’s generous offer to host, and by the sweet friends who brought their sons to the class with Samuel!

*Two children who are friends with Samuel had a lemonade stand and blessed us with the profits!  It’s so precious to see even children take the initiative to get involved and do the work of fundraising.

We had to file an extension request with the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services for their approval to adopt Savannah from Hong Kong.  The I800A Form required several other steps…more forms and documents, medical exams, fingerprinting, and a home study update.  Praise God, we received the USCIS approval in the mail today!

We’ve also been completing continuing education – reading, attending trainings and conferences. We attended Replanted Conference – 3 days & 1 night packed with tons of helpful information about trauma informed parenting, international adoption, bringing home an older child,  the trauma of a child who’s start was in an orphanage, nurturing our marriage, preparing biological children, trans-racial families, special needs, etc.

Practical preparation like identifying opportunities for Savannah with ESL, education, and her favorite sports once she’s in the USA; learning Cantonese through online classes, and finish purging and preparing Savannah’s bedroom. We also attend Replanted, a local adoption support group once a month to share a meal, pray together, encourage one another, and learn together, as our children are cared for, learn and play.

Life goes on while we continue to wait for Savannah!  We celebrated my birthday, our 11th wedding anniversary, and Thanksgiving! We focus on nurturing our marriage and enjoy participating in a weekly marriage small group together. We love our family time with Samuel! It’s wonderful watching him grow into an amazing young boy with a big heart for Jesus and His calling for adoption!  He started 3rd grade and we still homeschool him. Above all, we continue to pray and cling to God.  James 1:2-4 comforts and convicts us…we are holding onto Jesus and His promises, no matter what!

We covet your prayers!  If you’d like to financially partner with us in our adoption journey, we will continue raising funds until we are fully funded (*see below to give*).  Our hearts are full of gratitude for your love and support!

With love and joyful expectation,

Jorge, Jen & Samuel Uriostegui

“TRIALS, TESTS, FAITH AND PERSEVERANCE”

August 1, 2019

Four months have passed since we wrote our last adoption update.  Our sincere apology for not writing sooner.  We’ve had some delays and bumps in the road.  Quite frankly, April through July were very challenging months as our hearts long to bring Savannah home!  But, by God’s grace, we ARE NOT giving up because Savannah is worth the wait!

As we continue to pray in faith, waiting with perseverance for final approval from Hong Kong Central Authority, we are encouraged and strengthened by the truth of God’s Word.  James 1:2-4 (NIV) says, “Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.”

PROGRESS AND PRAISE IN THE WAITING!

1.  We received more donations towards our 2nd matching grant from Glen Ellyn Bible Church. We still have more funds to raise to receive the full $1,500 matching grant, but we send A HUGE THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO HAS GIVEN ANY AMOUNT!

2.     Thanks to the generous gift of time and talent from our amazingly gifted friend, Chrissy, we made a huge dent with purging and preparing Savannah’s room!

3.      We completed more “child-specific” training requirements.

4.    Jen met with our neighbor from Hong Kong and had a couple of sentences translated into Cantonese.  Then we practiced and prepared a short video to introduce the three of us to Savannah.  We also wrote Savannah a letter.  Both have been sent to her social worker for review and approval.

5.      We received a $500 grant from Forever Families Foundation.

6.      We received several calls, texts and emails from our family and friends asking about our adoption status.  It encouraged our hearts knowing we were in thoughts and prayers of so many!

CAN YOU HELP?  PRAYER AND PARTNERSHIP REQUEST!

1.     PRAY!  We need your faithful prayers!  Please pray for Jorge, Jen, Samuel and Hiu-Sze; for the adoption to be approved on every level; for all the provisions needed; for God’s will in all of our lives; grace for Savannah to learn English; grace for the 3 of us to learn Cantonese (it is HARD!); our letter and video to be given to Savannah and her heart to be touched by these efforts; bonds of heart connections to be formed between all 4 of us; and for faith to persevere joyfully in the waiting process!

2.    FINANCIAL PARTNERSHIP! We would be so grateful for a donation of any amount to help us bring Savannah home.  No gift is too small!!  Your donation could help us reach the full $1,500 matching grant from Glen Ellyn Bible Church, which is our immediate fundraising goal. We still have approximately $12,000 in remaining adoption expenses.  *PLEASE SCROLL DOWN FOR GIVING INFO.*

3.  Share our adoption journey with others you know who have a heart for adoption.  Perhaps they will join us in prayer and / or partner financially?

Our hearts are full of gratitude for your continued support in our adoption journey!

With love and joyful expectation,

Jorge, Jen & Samuel Uriostegui

“THE WAITING ROOM”

March 20, 2019

It seems like we’ve been “in the waiting room” for Savannah for far too long.  Actually, it was 1 year ago today we were first presented with the opportunity to adopt Savannah! While it’s been a long road, there have been many blessings along the way.  Our recent gift of encouragement is another generous from our church.  Glen Ellyn Bible Church awarded us a matching grant of $1,500 to be administered through Lifesong.  Once we receive $1,500 in donations, we will receive the matching grant of $1,500.  This is a HUGE BLESSING to help us with some of our remaining adoption costs of approximately $12,000.  For the sake of bringing Savannah home, we humbly ask, would you please consider making a donation of any amount you are able?  Every bit adds up and will help us reach our matching grant goal.  We are forever grateful for all of your generosity! *To give, please see info below.*

Please continue praying for our final approval with Hong Kong Central Authority (HKCA) and all those involved in reviewing our file.  Once we receive final approval, we can arrange to begin communicating with Savannah and also receive an approximate travel date.

While we wait, we continue praying and working as a family to prepare for Savannah.  Jorge and Jen recently attended an all day adoption training conference (CAFFA).  We still have a few additional training requirements to complete, we continue working on preparing Savannah’s room, and are trying to learn some Cantonese as a bridge builder with Savannah.  Please pray for grace in all of this, and for God to prepare us all for the life changes coming!

OUR DOSSIER IS BEING REVIEWED BY HONG KONG CENTRAL AUTHORITY (HKCA)!

March 1, 2019

FORWARD PROGRESS!

January 15th – Nightlight sent our additional documents to International Social Services (ISS) for their re-review and approval.

January 16th – ECFA (our local home study agency) received Hong Kong’s co-accreditation approval…another essential requirement fulfilled!

February 13th – ISS gave their seal of approval on our dossier and sent it to Hong Kong Central Authority (HKCA)!  3 PEOPLE AT HKCA NEED TO REVIEW OUR DOSSIER AND GRANT FINAL APPROVAL!  We’ve been told HKCA typically asks more questions &/or requests additional documents. This process can take several weeks or months.  Once we get HKCA’s approval, we still have several more steps in the process which could take 3-8 months before we can travel to get Savannah.

WHAT’S NEXT?

Pray, Work and Wait – While we wait, we are praying and working as a family to prepare for Savannah…by completing additional training requirements, purging and preparing the room that will become Savannah’s bedroom (it’s currently being used for storage), trying to learn some Cantonese, and fundraising.

PRAYER REQUESTS:

1. The HKCA dossier review process – especially for the 3 people who need to review our file and approve us. We are boldly asking for The Lord’s favor to receive a quick approval *without further questions or documents.  Savannah is 9 now and she is waiting for her forever family!

2. Grace, efficiency, unity and success in our preparation – training requirements, bedroom purging project, learning Cantonese, and fundraising $14,000.

3. God’s Help – to prepare the 4 of us for the life changes coming, for our hearts to bond and form a healthy attachment in our new family, for God to comfort Savannah and heal her hurting heart!

FINANCIAL NEED:

We have approximately $14,000 in remaining adoption expenses. Our fundraising goal is split into 2 parts:

·Part 1 (Current Phase): $9,500 to bring Savannah home! (Includes remaining international agency fees, government fees, travel, etc.)

· Part 2 (Next Phase): $4,500 due when Savannah is home. (Includes post adoption reports, adoption finalization in USA, etc.)

*We are deeply touched by all of the generous gifts we’ve received so far!  Your support will have a lifelong impact for Savannah!

HOW CAN YOU HELP?

1.  Pray!

2.  Are you able to make a tax-deductible donation? Any amount you give will help us get one step closer to bringing Savannah home! *Giving info below.*

3.  Would you share our adoption journey with people you know have a heart for adoption?

We are forever grateful for your continued support in our adoption journey!

With love and joyful expectation,

Jorge, Jen & Samuel Uriostegui

OUR DOSSIER HAS BEEN REVIEWED BY INTERNATIONAL SOCIAL SERVICES (ISS)

December 31, 2018

We hope you all had a wonderful Christmas!  We love this time of year as we celebrate

~ THE BEST GIFT ~ JESUS ~ OUR LORD AND SAVIOR, and HIS LOVE FOR ALL OF US!

On December 21st we received wonderful news!  Our adoption agency told us our Dossier was received by the International Social Services in Hong Kong, and they reviewed it within 3.5 weeks of receipt.  PRAISE GOD, THIS IS FASTER THAN EXPECTED!  ISS requested a few more documents, which we diligently worked on and sent to our agency quickly, so they should be forwarded to ISS next week.  Once ISS receives and reviews these documents, our Dossier will be sent to Hong Kong Central Authority for review and final approval. PHEW, we are so close to being through this step and on to the next!

WHAT’S NEXT?

1. Pray and Wait:  Please keep praying over the ISS & HKCA review process. We continue to seek The Lord’s favor to expedite us through these steps quickly, vs. it taking several months, and would love to be done with the exhausting “paper pregnancy” process. In short, for all layers of approval to be granted quickly!

2. Provision Needed:  We are humbled and appreciate the many generous and sacrificial gifts given for Savannah‘s adoption.  Fundraising efforts continue for the next phase of adoption expenses.  *Our goal is to raise $9,590 by January 7th, which is Savannah‘s 9th Birthday – to pay the remaining international adoption agency fees and travel expenses.*  Our son, Samuel, celebrated his 8th Birthday yesterday, and prayed, “Lord, when am I going to get my sister?!” As 2018 comes to an end, would you consider making a donation to help us bring Savannah home?  We know there are many causes worthy of aid, but helping an orphaned child become a part of a forever family, is a gift that will last Savannah a lifetime!  There’s still time to make an online donation and receive a tax receipt for 2018.  Would you help us finish 2018 financially able and ready to welcome Savannah into our family?

We appreciate everyone continuing to support us in our adoption journey by praying, helping financially as you are able, and sharing our need with others who have a heart for adoption!

With love and joy,

Jorge, Jen & Samuel Uriostegui

PRAISE GOD, OUR DOSSIER IS ON ITS WAY TO HONG KONG!!!

November 27, 2018

We are so thankful to our AWESOME GOD and OUR LOVING FAMILY AND FRIENDS!!!!  It’s been an AMAZING month of working, waiting, and through you, received God’s blessings!

*We worked hard to finish preparing the last batch of revised dossier documents and sent them to our international adoption agency.

*We waited patiently and humbly received many sacrificial and generous gifts!  You’re such a loving group of people who are personally invested in helping us bring Savannah home!

*From the depths of our hearts, we humbly thank every person who gave from their hearts and finances!  Thanks to everyone, we reached our immediate goal of $4,000!  This is such a blessing – we now receive the full matching grant of $4,000 from Lifesong and Glen Ellyn Bible Church!

*OUR DOSSIER IS NOW ON ITS WAY TO HONG KONG!!!  Our hearts are overflowing with gratitude for each person who heard our need and took action to help us financially. We are equally grateful for every person who is praying us through this journey.  This is no small task, it’s not an easy process and there have been many challenges to overcome! We are deeply grateful for Glen Ellyn Bible Church, Lifesong for Orphans, ECFA (our local home study agency), Nightlight Christian Adoptions (our international agency), and our friends who have written reference letters. This collaborative loving work and monumental help has brought us this far!

WHAT’S NEXT?

1. Pray and Wait:  Please keep praying!  The next step includes 2 layers in Hong Kong:  International Social Services (ISS), and Hong Kong Central Authority (HKCA).  Both ISS and HKCA need to review and approve our dossier for us to receive final approval to bring Savannah home.  We already received pre-approval from ISS so these are the next legal steps in the process, but they take time.  Please pray for the favor of The Lord to expedite us through these Hong Kong steps quickly, and ideally without having to spend any more time with questions, answers, and documents!

2. Provision Needed:  Since we have over $12,000 in remaining adoption expenses, we will continue fundraising and applying for more grants.  This fundraising site will remain active until we’ve reached our goal.

We appreciate everyone continuing to support us in our adoption journey by praying, helping financially as you are able, and sharing our need with others who have a heart for adoption!

With love and joy,

Jorge, Jen & Samuel Uriostegui

Funding Update

October 30, 2018

Dear Precious Family and Friends,

We’re writing tonight with humble hearts overflowing with gratitude.  Our deepest appreciation to those who have sacrificially given ANY amount to help us bring Savannah home!  Through the generosity of treasured family and friends, we have raised $1,650 towards our $4,000 matching grant goal!!!  Tears literally flow thinking about the impact these loving donations will make in the life of our daughter, Savannah Hope, Hiu-Sze!  From the depths of our hearts, thank you to EVERYONE who has given!  Thank you to those who cannot give, but are praying, sharing our story with others, and sending us encouraging notes…you also are so appreciated!  Our sweet Savannah is waiting and we are standing in faith, praying and trusting God to provide the money needed to bring her home!  We’d be so grateful for any amount you can give to help us make it happen!

With love and gratitude,

Miracles in the Mountains of Minutia!

October 19, 2018

To adopt a child, there seems to be MOUNTAINS OF MINUTIA that can be so discouraging at

times! It feels like the paperwork and questions WILL NEVER END!  Then all of sudden a

miracle breaks through and meets you at the top of a mountain!  It always comes right on

time to encourage us to keep fighting with relentless love and pursuit of Savannah.  We

praise Jesus for helping us overcome many obstacles and giving us victories along the

way.  Here are the highlights of our adoption milestones:

March-July of 2018: We worked through all our home study requirements with ECFA. In May,

ECFA’s building had a fire so we had to resubmit some of the requirements which delayed our

home study approval.

May 15, 2018: We submitted our application to The International Social Services Hong Kong

Branch Adoption Program.

July 23, 2018 We received our home study approval!

July 28, 2018: We sent our I-800A application to USCIS Department of Homeland Security.

August 24, 2018:  I-800A application was approved by USCIS!

June to August of 2018:  We continued answering ALL of Hong Kong Social Services questions

and sending them supporting documents.

August 21, 2018: We found out another family was trying to adopt Savannah as well.  The agency

took time to carefully determine the best family fit for Savannah.  We continued to ask God to prove

His will for Savannah.  We also learned one of our neighbor’s is also from Hong Kong.  She is

fluent in speaking Cantonese, Mandarin and English. Savannah speaks Cantonese, and minimal

English, but her schoolwork is in Mandarin.  Our neighbor is happy to help us with translation so

this is a blessing to have someone close by who can help with the initial language barrier. We

truly felt led by God to buy this condo last year, and our neighbor from Hong Kong also bought her

condo last year!  Proof God guides our steps!

August 28, 2018:  We were chosen as “the best family fit for Savannah“…PRAISE GOD!!!

August 29, 2018We drove to MilwaukeeWisconsin and obtained required legal documents from

USCIS. We also submitted our USA passport applications.

September 6, 2018: We submitted an application for a matching grant with Lifesong and Glen

Ellyn Bible Church.

September 7, 2018:  We received our USA passports!

September 14, 2018: We received approval for a matching grant from Lifesong and our church!

September 16, 2018:  Typhoon Mangkhut, one of the strongest storms, hit Hong Kong!  We are so

thankful for The Lord’s protection over Savannah and her foster family!

September 8th-25th: We worked diligently to prepare ALL of our dossier documents.

September 26, 2018:  We sent our Dossier packet to our agency for review.

October 4th-6th: We attended an adoption training conference, which was paid for via a

scholarship.

October 8th-19th: We worked on completing the required dossier revisions.
