Josh and Rebekah’s Adoption Journey!

Josh and Rebekah
Josh and Rebekah Louisville, Kentucky

Hello, and thank you for stopping by and learning about our domestic infant adoption! We’re Josh and Rebekah, and we've been married for almost 8.5 years. From the beginning, we’ve looked forward to having at least a couple of children, often imagining a beautiful combination of biological and adopted children. However, our adoption journey started a long time ago in a faraway land, so here we go!

When Rebekah was growing up in Uganda, she became interested in adoption while volunteering at a local orphanage. By twelve, she hoped that she might some day be able to adopt; and by the time we were engaged,  we had discussed the possibility of  eventually adopting. We've been honored to walk alongside several families in their adoptions since the beginning of our marriage. We’ve grown in our understanding of the depth of beauty and heartache unique to each adoption story. In all of these interactions, God surely was preparing us for where we are today.

We decided we were ready to become parents and celebrated our first pregnancy soon after, followed by the heartbreak of miscarriage and several long years of secondary infertility. In our sorrows, God has shown us His faithfulness in countless ways. We are so thankful for the precious support system He has provided through our family and friends, and we trust that, in the waiting, He has been gently and purposefully shaping us for good.

Our interest in adoption kept growing, and the Lord finally led us to start pursuing domestic infant adoption a little over a year ago. We will so joyfully receive, celebrate, and love whatever child(ren) He gives us!

Currently: Our home study was completed in September, we're actively reviewing cases, and we’ve been sending our profile to birth mothers so that they can consider us. We'll update you here whenever there's news!

The financial cost can be daunting: Agency fees, birth mom expenses and counseling, legal fees, and travel/hotel expenses often bring the total cost of a domestic infant adoption to anywhere from $35,000 to $50,000, and while we're prepared to pay a good chunk of that from our savings, we'd love your help for the rest. We’ve received generous matching grants funded by Orphan Care Alliance and Lifesong for Orphans: this means that they will match any donations made to this page, up to $9,000! We are raising funds in order to receive the grant. Would you consider coming alongside us with a tax-deductible donation? Anything we receive, up to $9,000, will be doubled, and any amount, big or small, will go twice as far!

Special Details!

September 5, 2022

A lot has happened since our last update, and we praise God for the many details that have encouraged us as we anticipate this beloved baby. We had the great privilege of meeting our birthmother, “Em,” and taking her to an appointment on August 2, at her request. We’re excited to share about that with you now!

We drove down (5 hours) the day before and spent the night in TN. It was surreal to pass Rebekah’s college and drive through sleepy neighborhoods, thinking of the memories that city already holds for us. We went to sleep, excited and wondering what new memories we’ll yet make in this town, by God’s grace.

It was SO good to meet Em the next morning! Both parties were a bit anxious to meet the other, but we are in awe of God’s kindness in the birth mother who chose us. She is a sweet and beautiful mama. We got to the clinic, and Josh stayed back while Rebekah followed Em back for her appointment. It was super exciting to see the ultrasound: her sweet baby looked cozy, wiggly, and cute! The sound of that heartbeat was a merciful gift.

It was a long appointment. Em was friendly and talkative in the waits between different segments of it. She had some tests done right at the end, including a DNA test that she’d requested–isn’t it amazing that we can know a baby’s gender as early as 10 weeks? A baby’s DNA shows up in his or her mother’s blood and can be isolated and studied.

One of the most amazing things about this appointment was hearing Em introduce Rebekah to the clinic staff. A question was asked several times, starting when Em was called back for her appointment to begin. Rebekah followed close behind. Someone would ask Em, motioning toward Rebekah, “Is she with you?” This happened each time Em was shown to a different room or practicioner, and each time, her response was precious. She could have just said, “yes,” but instead, Em would say, “she’s (Rebekah’s) the mom.” If the questioner looked confused, Em quickly followed that with, “she’s the mom I chose,” spoken clearly and with a big smile! We couldn’t have asked for a sweeter reassurance of Em’s feelings about her choice! It was humbling, and such a blessing, to hear these words spoken several times that morning.

We learned another very special detail several days later, when Em called to say, “we’re having a girl!” She also said that she was glad to tell us so that we can start planning more specifically. We couldn’t be more excited about this daughter, and the gracious thoughtfulness of her birth mother!!!!

Right now, this baby girl is around 17 weeks! We’re getting ready to update our home study (they’re only good for one year) and will have a home visit for that purpose on Thursday. Josh has been working on some projects around the house. Life has been very full since finding out that we’d been chosen! We continue to appreciate your prayers for Em, for her dear little girl, and for us as we prepare. Thank you so much for following along and being such evidences of God’s grace to us in this journey!!

We’ve matched!!!!!!!

July 12, 2022

We’ve officially been matched!! It feels surreal. It’s a really good situation, and despite how long the wait has seemed, the match came together quickly!

We asked to have our profile sent to a birth mother last Thursday. On Saturday, our agency director told us that this precious mama really liked our profile; and on Sunday, we spoke on the phone with the birth mother, who confirmed that she wants to move forward with us! We expect her baby to be born in TN (of all places, in Rebekah’s old stomping grounds!), in late January. It’s a little early yet to know if we’ll bring home a boy or girl, but we’re SO excited to meet this baby!!

Our agency directs families to say very little about birth moms upon being matched, regardless of what the birth mom’s story is. We can’t say much more at this point and want to be fair to both mom and baby with how we handle their stories. We’re using Em as a pseudonym. I’m happy to let you know, though, that she’s maintaining a healthy pregnancy, she cares about her baby very much, and she’s welcoming us into her life super graciously! It’s so humbling. We look forward to meeting her in person on August 2.

If you ask us how we’re feeling, I’d say EXCITED, with excitement that’s suspended in a swirling mix of hope/fear/disbelief/celebration. We also feel so thankful…Thankful beyond words to have been chosen by this beautiful mama, and thankful for your prayers, notes, and contributions. Thank you so much for allowing God to use you to get us here.

We ask for your continued prayers as we enter this new phase, and for your particular prayers for God to bless Em and to keep things going smoothly for both mom and baby. Thank you!

Waiting for a match

May 7, 2022

Excited. Weary. Hopeful. Wondering.

This is how we’ve been. In some ways, we’re much closer to adopting than when we were: 1) we’ve sent our profile book to a growing list of expectant mothers seeking adoptive parents, 2) generous and kind people (YOU) have knocked our socks off with your donations, and 3) God is working in amazing ways, even if we can’t see what He’s up to yet. These are the encouraging things we hold on to during this season, reminders that something’s really happening, even though…

Waiting is hard. But we’ve only been in this phase (waiting for a match) since December, which isn’t terribly long yet. It could still be a while, because although we’re actively sending our profile book (filled with pictures and descriptions of us and our home/community/backgrounds/etc.), each expectant mama we respond to also receives a stack of similar books from other hopeful adoptive families. It’s a wonderful thing that she can review the various options and take time to choose from us all, and we’ll keep sending our profile until it reaches the right mama who chooses us back.

In the meantime, we pray hard for these moms, asking God to watch over them, protect them, and provide them with families that will love them and their little ones well. We can hardly wait to be one of those families, but we know that each family they choose is an answer to our prayers! It’s business as usual here, otherwise–Josh is fixing helicopters; I’m teaching pottery classes and making pots for my shop; we’re busy each week with our church; and we’re fixing things up around our house and yard. All plans are made with open hands, ready to drop everything if we match with a baby who was just born last week, or to rearrange plans if we find out “our” due date is next month, etc. It could be next year or next week…And we’ll be overjoyed to update you when we know more!

Thank you so much for your donations toward our adoption!!!!! Words aren’t sufficient to describe how encouraged we are by your participation in this adventure. The $10,000 matching grant has been fully matched, and we are in awe of how quickly that happened! There’s still plenty of time to add a contribution, if anyone else was hoping to do so, but we really just want to say thank you, and praise God for providing so faithfully. We would also ask that you pray for us as we wait, that our waiting time would be fruitful and full of hope, and please pray for the expectant mamas who are considering adoption plans.
