Help us bring home LT’s biological baby brother

Bobby Vick
Bobby Vick Apex, North Carolina

Hey guys, thanks for dropping by our story.  We’re the Vicks – Bobby, Meredith, and Thomas.  Our adoption dreams came true just over a year and a half ago when we got the call that we had been matched with an expectant mother, who was being induced in nine days.  Eight days later we were on a plane to Wichita, Kansas and two days after that, our son, Thomas (affectionately also known by his initials, “LT”), was born.  We spent a challenging month in Wichita due to complications at Thomas’ birth, but were given the joy of bringing our sweet boy home in time for Christmas 2018.  Thomas is such a joy – not only to us, but to all of our friends and family, near and extended.

Fast forward to the evening of April 30th of this year.  One month into COVID-19 flipping the world upside down, we were at home in North Carolina on a Zoom call with church friends when a text came through from our case worker in Wichita.  The preview line from the text notification was enough to make both of our heart rates increase as we smiled at each other with excitement – Thomas’ birth-mother and birth-father were expecting again, due in August, and wanted to know if we would consider adopting his biological sibling, another baby boy!  Had we thought about adopting again?  Of course.  Did we expect it to be a biological sibling, while we still had a one-year old, one month after one of us had left our job to start a new business, or in the middle of a global pandemic?  Not at all!  Regardless, we could not have been happier to receive the news and offered a resounding “YES” to the request.  How could we pass on the opportunity to raise these biological brothers together?

The past three months of unexpected adoption preparation has reminded us yet again of just how strong our support network of family and friends truly is.  They (you!) brought us through our first adoption journey and we have already felt the love and kindness of all those around us as we prepare to bring home LT’s baby brother.

It’s hard to ask for help.  Harder to yet to accept it.  It is humbling and requires vulnerability that is uncomfortable to say to the least.  Yet we know how important assistance is and will be as we complete the next month of our steps to bring our second son home.  With that, we are asking for your support in whatever way you are able to provide.  We recognize this is a difficult time for everyone and we are sensitive to the fact of asking for donations when so many are facing very real challenges – job loss, fear of COVID-19, separation from love ones and friends, sickness and even death.  For these reasons we don’t want any one to feel obligated to give and also believe it’s important to share specific ways in which your assistance will be used.

In our first adoption, while the time from matching to birth was very short, we had been in the process for over a year and during that year were preparing financially for the costs that we knew were ahead.  This time around, we’ve had to expedite those preparations substantially.  At the risk of sharing too much, but out of a heart of transparency and a desire for those that haven’t been through adoption to be able to understand more about the process, below are the estimated expenses that we have either already incurred or expect to in the next month of completing adoption #2:
