Help Bring Home Little Mikel (#OperationCALM)

Liz Mikel Bloomington, Illinois

Hi! We’re David & Liz Mikel. We’re in our mid-twenties, have been married for two years, and have for years had a heart for orphans. We always planned to have adoption be part of our family story, but we originally thought it’d be something that entered into the picture as it does for many families – after having a few biological kids.

As we started talking about kids, however, we realized God was laying something entirely different on our hearts. Biological children weren’t something we longed for – but having a family, and giving an orphan the opportunity to belong in a family, those concepts were stamped on our heart in a big way.

So we talked about it, and began to pray about the possibility of adoption for our family. Some months passed, and adoption was brought up occasionally in our conversation, without any action involved. Then in June (2015), we traveled to the slums of Nairobi, Kenya, to work with orphans and the pastors and teachers who pour into these kids. In short, this trip stirred us, shook us up, and plopped us down in a spot where conversation wasn’t enough anymore. We’d seen orphans, desperately looking for love, and we poured out our hearts; we’d watched kids reach out their hands, and we gladly met them with hugs; we met children seeking belonging, and we remembered our desire to welcome someone into our home.

The day we arrived home, David started researching adoption agencies and country regulations for individuals and couples looking to adopt. We prayed together and with others, and God placed us together with an agency, All God’s Children International (AGCI), and we applied for adoption with the Bulgarian program. And good news: we were accepted!

Thus begins our journey in becoming Little Mikel’s parents. We have many steps to walk through: lots of paperwork, conference calls with our agency, two trips to Bulgaria, and a lot of funds to raise before we can call Little Mikel our own. The entire process will cost approximately $42,000. We have already raised (and paid fees along the way) about $10,000; so we have about $32,000 to go!

We know that God will provide us with the funds exactly when and how he knows is right – and we know that a significant part of that provision will be from friends and family who are unbelievably generous. Don’t get us wrong – we’ll definitely be putting in lots of our own dollars too. We just know that God creates us all with generous hearts, and we know friends like you often demonstrate that in REALLY big, humbling, entirely unbelievable ways – and we can’t wait to see exactly how it will all come together.

NOTE: We are so blessed to be provided a matching grant from Eastview Christian Church, up to $2,000! All donations that come in starting May 1, 2016, (up to $2,000) will be 100% matched - so your dollar means DOUBLE the amount toward bringing Little Mikel home!
