We have exciting news! We are adopting!
Last year we began the journey of growing our family through domestic adoption. This has long been on our hearts, and we eagerly anticipate the moment when we finally can bring a baby into our home. We received our home study approval in September, meaning that we can now match with specific adoption situations — a process that can take several months. The path to building our family has not been as we planned or expected, but we continue to trust God’s timing and sovereignty.
“Trust in the Lord, and do good: dwell in the land and befriend faithfulness. Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your ways to the Lord; trust in him, and he will act.” Psalm 37:3-5
Our desire to adopt, both individually and as a couple, began before we were even married 6 years ago. For me (Ashley), this dream took root in college when I visited an orphanage in South Africa. I shared my dreams of adopting with Tom, who was not at all surprised. He agreed and shared in my desire to grow our family through adoption. We had dreams of several kids, beginning biologically and adding more through adoption down the road. However, a few years into marriage, we realized God had us on a different timeline. We spent several tearful years consulting doctors, praying, and seeking answers to our infertility. While we still don’t have the clear answers we’d like to, we know that someday we will. In the meantime, it’s incredibly humbling to think that a deeply painful season in our life can lead to us adopting a child in need of a loving family.
We don’t see adoption as a secondary option. Rather, we believe God placed the desire to adopt within us. He has only called us to obedience, and we are trusting him to guide our steps. We know that adoption begins with a tremendous loss and is not easy. Still, we can step out in faith because God has been so faithful to us and adopted us into his family (Ephesians 1:5).
Now that we’ve cleared the home study phase, we are actively seeking a match with birthmothers. This step makes the process even more real and has reminded us how important it is to welcome our community into our adoption journey.
First and foremost, we would like all of our friends and family to join us in praying for the right situation. We need wisdom to navigate this process, which is full of risks and variables. While we certainly want to provide a loving, nurturing, forever home to a child, we also recognize the needs of birthmothers, birthfathers, and all those affected by this little life (or lives – we’re keeping our eyes out for twin situations!).
One of the most intimidating part of adopting is the expense. We certainly believe that children are priceless. Nonetheless, the adoption process has real-world costs. Domestic adoptions often cost $40,0000-$50,000 or more for social work fees, legal fees, and birthmother health/living expenses.
“My God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:19
While we continue to save and cut expenses, we also know there are some in our community who share our desire to see every child have a loving home. For this reason, we’ve partnered with Lifesong to provide a platform to accept tax-deductible gifts for our adoption. We’re also thrilled to have been awarded a $2,500 matching grant from a local church (Mount Ararat Baptist Church in Stafford, VA administered by Lifesong), maximizing the generosity of our friends and family.
We know that many people have been praying for us, near and far. We’ve also received many words of encouragement, both affirming our desire to adopt and recognizing that this road has not been easy. We are grateful for each of you.
We are humbled and honored to be embarking on this journey. We plan to provide updates as they warrant. If you have any questions about our story or about the Lifesong platform, please let us know. We wish you a joyous new year!
