In His Hands: the Nelson Path of Adoption

Troy and Melissa Nelson Waldoboro, Maine

Hello! We are the Nelson family – Troy and Melissa, and our sons Elijah (10) and Samuel (7). We are so thrilled to be walking this path of faith to bring two more members into our family! We feel honored that God would choose us for this great calling.

Perhaps, if asked early in our marriage, we would have said that we were open to the possibility of adoption. We certainly viewed it as a wonderful thing, but it was not at the forefront of our plans for many years as we settled into married life and started a biological family.

In 2013, our family relocated from upstate New York to mid-coast Maine to serve in a local church there. Little did we know that God had placed us there for more than just the pastoral ministry that was the immediate reason for our move. We found in this church a very strong community of orphan advocates and adoptive families, and it was there that our eyes were truly opened and our hearts were stirred. We began to see God’s love for orphans throughout the Scriptures and that caring for orphans was part of “religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless” (James 1:27 NIV). This care was modeled before us, over the course of a few years, as we watched several families that we knew bring international orphans into their homes for short-term hosting programs. Some of those families also pursued adoption. The orphan crisis seemed much more real after ‘rubbing shoulders’ with a few of them, and we began to consider what part we might have in orphan care.

In the winter of 2016, we felt God lead us to participate in a 4 week orphan hosting program. We believed that even this short period of time would be a valuable opportunity to offer love and memories to a child who needed those things. We were doubly blessed to have two siblings from Ukraine, S and O, in our home that winter. We were forever changed by the experience, and found it very difficult to let them go at the end of the hosting period. As we sought God’s will through much prayer and consideration, we did not feel Him leading us to pursue adoption at that time. We began praying for God to provide a family for them and to show us His plan.

Through unexpected circumstances, we were given opportunity to re-host one of the same children the following summer (2017) as a backup family, while the other remained in Ukraine.  We were surprised and did not know what God was doing in us, but we stepped forward and poured into this girl for another 6 weeks. Although we still did not sense God calling us to pursue adoption, our love for both of these siblings was strong. We continued to pray.

By the following winter, in His own perfect time, God used specific circumstances and individually spoke to each of our hearts to show us that His answer had not been “no”, but “wait”! He clearly impressed on us all (our boys included!) that we should attempt to add these two to our family. There aren’t adequate words to express the joy that this brought to our hearts. We began the long process in early spring of 2018. Over and over since that time, God has confirmed to us that as we walk in obedience to what he has called us to do, He will provide for our needs and orchestrate the details in ways that only He can. It is both humbling and awe-inspiring to see His hand in it all! We are excited to be moving forward and eager to finalize the adoption, bringing two more cherished members into our forever family.

Ukraine Court Approval Complete!

April 20, 2019

Well, we’ve gone to Ukraine and returned yet again. The second trip AKA “the Court Trip” was a success!  This is the trip where we literally go to the courthouse and stand before a judge and two “jurors” to plead our case. It didn’t start off so well when one of the jurors didn’t show up, almost causing the appointment to be canceled. We immediately started praying, and praise God – a substiute was found to replace her. The file was thoroughly reviewed, and we were asked some standard questions. S and O also had to speak, stating their desire to be adopted by us and why. There was also a panel including our facilitator, an orphanage worker, a psychologist, and a social worker. All of them were there to speak in support of the adoption. 🙂 The judge was very no-nonsense and spoke/read so fast without taking a break for translation. Our translator couldn’t really keep up so had to summarize instead. All in all, it felt very serious but not necessarily tense. The final outcome was that the judge and jurors ruled in our favor. Praise the Lord! S and O are officially our son and daughter. Now we endure a mandatory 30 day waiting period before we return to finalize immigration details and bring them home. We are SO close!

Thank you for being part of our journey!

One Down, Two to Go

March 14, 2019

We have recently returned from our first trip to Ukraine. Two trips remain before we are able to bring our son and daughter home forever.
Phew! We were away for 10 days and most of them were a whirlwind. So much that needed to happen … travel, paperwork and notaries, appointments, more travel, more paperwork and notaries …  at times it felt like we were being dragged around and just doing what we were told. Thankfully, we have experienced in-country facilitators who know exactly what needs to be done! Just when we were adjusting to the fast pace, the weekend rolled around and “business” came to a screeching halt until Monday. That may have been even more maddening than those hectic days.  But the bottom line is that we did what we needed to do. Travel Phase One: COMPLETE!

The very best part of the trip, of course, was that we were able to visit with our S and O after such a long, long time apart. The reunion could not have gone better. They greeted us warmly with big smiles and long hugs. I do believe that our relationship was solidified by the fact that we actually showed up, from across the ocean … just for them. We were able to spend a few hours on three different days together, and it was such a blessing.

Now we rest and wait. Trip two should be within a month or so. We’re still waiting for a confirmed date. Please continue to pray with us over our family and adoption process.

* UKRAINE BOUND *

January 30, 2019

We have our first travel date!! Our adoption will require three trips to Ukraine before we can bring our son and daughter home. So this is only a start, but the end is in sight!

We’ve been working hard for 10 months to reach this point of the process. Now that we’re here …  well, to tell the truth, it seems rather surreal. How did we get here? Is this actually happening? OH YES! The date is set, the flight is booked, and in a matter of weeks we will set foot in a country we’ve never been to but that is already deeply part of our lives. We will get the official referral for our S and O. We will sign and submit important papers. And best of all, we will reunite with a young man and a sweet girl whom we have held in our hearts for two years. We will look into their eyes, hug them, and tell them that we love them and we have come for them.

Please pray for us! If you are able, please support us with a financial donation! We appreciate and value every single one who partners with us as we walk this path of adoption. Thank you.
