Finishing the Journey

Nathan Mayes
Nathan Mayes Bethel, Missouri

A little about ourselves, we have been on this adoption journey for the last 5 years. We were officially matched on Sept. of 2021. We headed over for the fostering period on Oct. 12th, 2021. We then had the awesome blessing of meeting our little guy finally on November 18th, 2021 (It took a little while because the first match fell through because of false information).

Unfortunately, we happen to still be in the country of Ghana. It has been a rollercoaster of emotions and finances for the last 10 months. What originally was supposed to be 2 trips (one 4 weeks, and another 2 weeks), became having to live in country with our little guy for now over 10 months. Due to new laws implemented, after we landed in October, we were stuck in a tough situation. Thankfully, we had enough money through savings, donations, and grants to see us through for the first several months. However, the situation continues to drag on.

We are now, due to caring for children back at home and in Ghana, financing two households, the cost of living in Ghana being extraordinarily high, and loss of income (my wife and I can only work part time remotely), we are pretty much bankrupt. Just for transparency sake, our costs at this point are over $125,000. We have used every avenue possible to find funding to keep us afloat. Through the generosity of grants, loans, and the continued generosity of others, we have limped along and we are so grateful for the help. However, our need seems to be never ending at this moment, as we are still in Ghana trying to finish the process.

Thankfully, we are a step closer as our little guy became officially our son on July 19th, 2022 in the Ghanaian courts. We are hoping only a couple more months before we all are reunited. Yay!

If there was any other recourse, I would not presume on everyone’s generosity again. However, Lifesong has graciously offered us a $10,000 matching grant. We are hoping you could help us get a little closer to finishing this journey financially.

You have done so much for us already in this nearly 5 year journey. Thank you for even considering helping us again! We appreciate Life Song and everyone else who continues to make this journey possible.
