We’re adopting! Why? Here’s our story, the start of it anyway…
We’ve seen God use ordinary couples to welcome children into their homes through adoption many times, but neither of us ever considered it could be a part of our story. For nearly a decade, we’d go about our lives, starting careers, buying a house, and having babies, without giving adoption a thought.
In late 2019, we attended a fundraiser for our church’s orphan ministry. I asked Alex if he could see us adopting someday. By then, we had our hands and hearts full with a six, four and two-year-old. “Yeah, maybe?!” he said.
Not long after, we learned that a couple from our church were adopting. We were so excited for them! Then, I unexpectedly ran into her at work. God is so cool that way. Out of pure curiosity, I started asking her about their adoption.
God began to awaken something in our hearts
that we didn’t even realize was there.
As life so easily does, we got caught up in the daily grind and adoption wasn’t on our minds, until the summer of 2020, when I had a conversation with a family member about abortion. My heart broke as I tried to comprehend the justification of ending an innocent life. I broke for the babies who were never given a chance. I broke for the moms that felt like that was their only option. For as hard as that conversation was, God used it to give me that final nudge. I told Alex how I was feeling and asked him to pray about it.
In the following weeks, we had many long talks about all the reasons not to adopt. None of those reasons outweighed our desire to give a child a loving family. We prayed. We felt peace. We took the first step. Then we took another step and another. And now we wait for the Lord to use us in whatever way He desires. His will be done.
How can you help?
Pray. Your prayers mean more than you will ever know. Pray for God’s care and protection over this child and his/her birth family. Pray for peace as they make this unimaginable decision. Pray that God would give us wisdom and unwaivering faith that what WE want is also what HE wants.
