From Eastern Europe to Texas: Wheat Family Adoption

Kathryn Wheat San Antonio, Texas

Our adoption story began 40 years ago, when Katie was given a loving home through adoption. Since we were first married, almost 20 years ago, we always knew that we would adopt as well. We adopted our first child over 12 years ago, and he is now 16 years old. We have 3 children currently, though one is grown and out of the house.

We had not planned on growing our family again until we were introduced to the Latvian hosting program Project 143 by a dear friend of ours. Through this program, we met an amazing, bubbly, loving 13-year-old girl. We hosted her over the Christmas season 2017-2018 and she immediately became a part of the family. We knew that we needed to make her a part of our family forever. We began the adoption process immediately. We had the pleasure of being able to host her again over the summer 8-week hosting season this year as well. She just turned 14 this last week!

After a short paperwork stall during my deployment, we are getting closer (we hope!). We have currently submitted all of our dossier paperwork for translation to Latvia and it should be on the orphan court's desk within the next 2 weeks! We are requesting to adopt our 14-year-old as well as her 7-year-old little sister.

Unfortunately, the adoption process is both lengthy and expensive. Along with adoption fees to our adoption agency and the Latvian government, there are 3 seperate trips to Latvia that must be completed...along with the associated costs of airline tickes and hotel/house stays for several weeks. This all totals up to around $32,000!

These girls have both been in an orphanage for 7 years (since birth for the youngest). We cannot wait to give them a loving forever home. YOU CAN HELP make this a reality for them. Your donation through here is 100% tax deductible and will help us get these girls home as quickly as possible.

STRIPE charges an online processing fee (2.2% +.30 USD per transaction). Your donations will be decreased by this amount. You may also send a check payable to “Lifesong for Orphans”. In the memo line please write “Wheat 7806”, to ensure it is credited to our account. Please mail to Lifesong for Orphans, PO Box 40, Gridley, IL 61744.

Lifesong has been blessed with partners who underwrite all U.S. administrative and fundraising costs (TMG Foundation and other partners). That means 100% of your donation will go directly to the adoption.

  • In following IRS guidelines, your donation is to Lifesong for Orphans. This organization retains full discretion over its use, but intends to honor the donor’s suggested use.
