Our adoption journey began in 2009 with a short term mission trip to Kenya. We went with our church Port City to visit an orphanage they helped to build many years ago. God was growing a desire in us for adoption and we felt that this trip really helped to confirm this desire. As God has adopted us in his family we felt that caring for the orphans was a call in our life and that we wanted to be part of this by adopting internationally. In 2009 we moved to Italy to start our journey as missionaries and in 2010 we applied in Italy to adopt. A year later we had to pause the adoption process, because we were expecting a child. Our son Adrien was born in 2011 and in 2013 we decided to restart the process. After we completed all the necessary steps in 2015 we were given the ok from the Italian government to adopt. For various reasons we felt led to adopt from the country of Nicaragua and we began that journey in July 2015.
Later that year some changes were made in Nicaragua’s adoption system and they extremely slowed down the process of international adoption. When things seem to be getting a bit better in 2018 civil unrest broke out in the country and after several months our adoption agency encouraged us to think about changing countries. We had still been waiting for a match and the chances of being matched soon were very slim. So, after much prayer and reflection we spoke with our agency and in June 2018 we decided to change our country. It wasn’t an easy decision since we had been waiting so long and praying for Nicaragua, but we had a peace about it and felt it was the right thing to do.
In February 2019 our agency contacted us and asked if we’d be open to giving our availability to adopt a 3 sibling group. We initially told the agency in 2015 that we were open to 1 or 2 children, but we hadn’t imagined that they would ask us about 3! We had so many emotions of excitement, fear, doubts and questions. We knew this would drastically change our lives in so many ways. We asked many people to pray with us for this and after a few days we knew that God was leading us to say “yes” to the possibility of adopting these 3 siblings. We felt confident that it was in God’s hands and that if His will was for us to have these 3 then we would be chosen. On May 3rd 2019 we received the call that we were matched with these 3 siblings and that we would need to prepare to leave for our first trip before the end of the month.
On May 22nd we left for our first trip and met the children the next day. We fell in love with Rinat 7, Ruzanna 5 and Sitora 4, from the first moment we saw them. Our son Adrien, who is now 8, was very excited too. He wasn’t able to come along to meet them, but he waited at home anticipating our return with all the photos and videos of his future brother and sisters. Finally, his heart’s desire to have siblings was starting to become a reality.
It is now July 2019. We are finishing up all the required documents for the second trip where we will go in front of the judge for the adoption’s final decree. If all the paperwork required is accepted with no further documentation needed, we should be able to make this trip in the fall 2019. We are hopeful that the rest of the process will be smooth and that we can make the third trip to bring our kids home before the end of the year.
Our adoption costs, including trips travel and lodging included, are approximately $40,000.00. (Costs breakdown: $6,000.00 Italy agency fees, $25,000.00 country adoption fees, $9,000.00 travel and on the ground fees). It’s a crazy amount of money. When we made the decision to say yes to these three children we knew that it would cost not only money, but many sacrificial changes to our lives and future. It was going to cost us, but we wanted to keep our eyes fixed on God’s Kingdom and not our own. What rang loudest in our minds was, “are you willing to lay down your lives and welcome these three children into your earthly family, so that you can help lead them into God’s eternal family?” We felt that this was ultimately worth every penny. So, we would love for you to join us in this incredible journey by first praying for us. Then please take some time to prayerfully consider if God might be leading you to support us financially. We are confident that He will provide for all our needs and we are so thankful. So far our sending church, Port City Community, has been very generous in supporting our adoption and will be matching the first $2,000.00 we raise. Also, Lifesong for Orphans will be matching the amount of $2,500.00 that we raise.
Thank you and God bless!
Andrea, McKenzie, Adrien, Rinat, Ruzanna and Sitora
