Daria: The Gift of Adoption

Kurt Petrich Norfolk, Virginia
Dear Family and Friends!...

We are writing with exciting news that little Daria (5 years of age) will join our family within the year!  Daria is right now, somewhere between Germany and Russia. She is at an orphanage awaiting our arrival as soon as our paperwork for travel and adoption is approved.

We Started Volunteering for Orphanages

For us, this journey of adoption began over 2 years ago when we volunteered at orphanages.  It was then; we saw the needs of orphans in a deep and tangible form, with their faces, names and voices etched in our memories.   After returning to the US, we saw the deep need for the parental bond for each orphan to belong to a family.

Deeper Love for the Orphans

In 2017, we took Trust Based Relational Intervention (TBRI). It’s a framework for children from hard places, and we could see even deeper, the challenges that many of these youngsters have.  We have become more grateful for our adoption as heirs and children in God's family, just as Galatians 4:4-5 where it says “But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to Sonship.”

Prayers, Paperwork, Apostilles

In that same year, in much prayer, we began the road to adoption.  After months of paperwork, notaries, apostilles, authentications, doctors visits, a home study, trips to Richmond and adoption training, we submitted our dossier to the country for review.  We are now awaiting our approval from Daria's country and the US State Department to begin the official journey of being matched with our future child.

Our Excitement in Bringing Daria Home

Now, we are writing to share our excitement and joy, and to ask for your prayers and petitions.  We are completing our adoption and preparing to flyi to Daria's country to bring Daria home.  We think that upon arrival in the US, there will be many more uphill battles that will require prayer.  These include working through attachment issues and potential developmental delays.

Lifesong’s Gracious Matching Grant

We want to share about the gracious receipt of a $2,500 matching grant from Lifesong for Orphans to aid us with Daria's adoption. Our goal date for the grant is March 28th, 2018. Funds are accepted until our adoption is complete and we are home together. Daria's adoption, like most others from her birth country, will cost anywhere from $25,000-$30,000, including airfare, paperwork and the mandatory fees. Thus far, we have paid $5,000 of the total cost, and this matching grant is an incredible help towards the rest!

With Daria, The Lord is Growing Our Family

Although we understand that we cannot help every one of the millions of orphans on our own, we believe with certainty that God has called us to be Daria's forever family.  We are excited! The Lord is growing our family and molding us as His children in this adventure!  As part of our efforts to fundraise, we want to live out what James describes in chapter 1:27, “Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep one's self from being polluted by the world.”

We Are Encouraging Others in Their Adoptions

As a result, our commitment to helping others adopting children from hard places is as strong as ever. It's our way to honor God in our adoption and extend our love to others in need. We hope to serve them as God has called us during this waiting period before we get Daria.  In all of this, we are thankful to be a part of Christ’s Body.  We want you to know that we appreciate your friendship, prayers and support!  We will keep you updated and introduce you to Daria soon!

In Him,

Kurt, Cyndi and Christella
