The Cullen Family Adoption Journey to India

Blake and Elizabeth Cullen Cary, North Carolina

Our adoption journey has been a slow and steady walk. God planted seeds for over ten years while we didn’t even realize the bigger story He was writing.

It started in October of 2011, when Blake and I walked into church and our pastor’s wife introduced us to a single Indian woman who faced a tragic incident, and we had the privilege of getting to know her and her two girls over the next few years. It was through this friendship that God placed a seed in my heart for the country of India and the hardships that some women endure in that country.

Then in the Spring of 2014, close friends adopted two little boys from China. We watched their hearts long for the fatherless. We also witnessed Blake’s brother as he and his wife adopted two teens from Latvia. As we watched these international adoption journeys unfold, my heart began to stir and wonder if God was calling our family to adopt. Blake’s heart wasn’t ready immediately. However, a few months later Blake had a vivid dream where someone placed a baby girl at his feet and he swept her away to safety; after that dream he agreed we were meant to adopt.

We have had many other ‘God moments’ since then where God has spoken to us specifically to confirm His calling, including through a friend’s dream and an unlikely contact with an adoption agency. God repeatedly has been faithful and clear that He is writing adoption as part of our family story. We stepped forward in faith and obedience in January 2019 as we began the adoption process with Lifeline.

There have been times when the process has been overwhelming, when it seemed impossible for the details to work out. However, we continually reflect on how God has spoken to us specifically over the last 10 years, and we believe He will continue to be faithful as we bring our little girl home from India. We truly believe she will be a blessing to all who meet her; one who melts the hearts of others.

As our adoption journey continues, we will place our hope in the Lord.

Romans 4:18 – “Against all odds when it looked hopeless, Abraham believed the promise and expected God to fulfill it.”

Isaiah 8:17 – “I will wait for the Lord and I will hope in him.”
