The Constance Family Adoption (Bringing home Maylei Grace)

David and Kristi Constance
David and Kristi Constance Cumberland Furnace, Tennessee

We are David and Kristi Constance and we have wanted to adopt since the beginning of our marriage 15 years ago! We both strongly believe that when God places the desire of adoption on your heart that he makes a way for those desires to be fulfilled. We both feel that adoption is an absolutely beautiful way to complete a family. We have prayed heavily concerning adoption and God has shown us many families who were beautifully knit together through the miracle of adoption (Including our own!). We were personally able to witness the blessing, the healing and the journey these families experienced through adoption.

In 2016, our lives were forever changed. We were blessed to bring home our first daughter Kara Lee. She’s now almost 9 years old. Watching her grow up and thrive in a loving home has been such a privilege. It is a blessing and an honor to be her parents. She has one of the most compassionate hearts we have ever seen. She empathizes with others and shows great concern if you are hurt or tired. She has been through so much in her short life. After coming home, she has had to endure four major surgeries. We have never seen someone as brave as her. Each time, she amazed the doctors by her resilience. God truly watched over her through each procedure and she would amaze us at her sunny disposition through it all. She has taught us to be brave no matter what you endure.

After bringing Kara Lee home, we were NEVER the same and we didn’t want to be. Our hearts and eyes were opened to the countless children who still waited like our precious daughter did.  After much prayer, we realized that God wasn’t done with us just yet! We decided to adopt another older child with special needs as we feel that they are often overlooked through no fault of their own. They deserve a loving family just as much as the younger children do. Year after year these children wait and slowly begin to lose hope as they watch other children join their forever families. This is the sad reality of many older children in the orphanage. Our daughter Kara Lee tells us how she “waited for a mommy and daddy for a VERY long time”. We hug her closely and tell her we are sorry she had to wait so long for us.

Recently, a close friend made us aware of a precious 7 year old girl who has waited a long time for a family. For years she has been bounced around from one agency to another due to no fault of her own. Her current living situation is not a good one. Her orphanage is in a very rural community. There is no heat or air. Accounts from those who have visited before confirmed that there wasn’t a single toy for a child to play with. No dolls, no building blocks and not even a single ball. The sterile floors and walls resembled that of a hospital. The beds lacked mattresses and consisted of a solid wood board with a blanket for the child to pull over themselves. There are other sad situations that I can’t mention here in respect for her privacy. Please understand she has had to endure some horrific things that no child should ever have to experience. This precious girl needs to get out of there as soon as possible! Even with such bleak surroundings, she continues to let her optimism shine through. She can be seen smiling in most of her photos and has such a sunny disposition.

We decided to name her “Maylei Grace” which means beautiful grace. She is a perfect child of God and we can’t wait to tell her how cherished and loved she is.

36974270_1549825436889785_r.jpeg

After being made aware of her dire situation, we prayed heavily for God’s will. We both felt complete peace to begin the journey of bringing this sweet girl home. We moved forward with our agency and are now officially matched with her! Our daughter Kara Lee has been praying for her every night and looks forward to having a little sister. She has already asked if she can share her clothes, toys and room with her. Our hearts were both full as we told her “Yes! Of course you can!”. We think this picture below of her announcing that she’s getting a sister shows her excitement perfectly!

36974270_1549825574412837_r.jpeg We know that we are following God’s calling and feel so thankful and blessed to be called to adopt. We can’t wait to hold Maylei for the very first time and for her to experience the love of a family. We want her to know that she is wanted, loved and she will be cherished for the rest of her life.  She needs to know that her life matters and that we prayed for her daily before she even joined our family.

We were recently made aware that Maylei Grace now knows she has a family coming for her! We were incredibly blessed to receive a video of the EXACT moment the orphanage told her she has a family. We were overjoyed to watch her excitement as our picture was shown to her on a phone for the very first time. We cried tears of happiness as her face lit up with surprise followed by joy. Her eyes seemed to shine with hope knowing we are coming for her soon. We managed to capture some screenshots from the video. Our hearts are so full right now!

Financially, we’ve had to step out in COMPLETE faith for this adoption. Although we have the means to provide for Maylei once she’s home, our savings account has been drained from our first adoption along with medical debt from her our first daughter’s surgeries. Yet we would do it all over in a heartbeat. The cost of adoption is nothing compared to the blessing of welcoming a child into your home.

We are doing everything in our power to raise the funds to help bring Maylei home. David will be working 50 hour work weeks and I will be selling MANY extra items in my online etsy shop, Ebay and various items from our home while managing our small farm. We also will be doing an online adoption auction in April. Financially, it would be our dream to fund her adoption. We are trying to avoid going further into debt if possible as we know she will need some speech therapy, occupational therapy and possible physical therapy after we bring her home. These medical needs will already be substantial financially without the cost of adoption to add to them. Given that we are on a modest pay scale, it has been a long and difficult road to raise the funds to make this adoption possible. We will continue to work incredibly hard on our side to help raise funds in any way possible. While we may not be considered rich by the world’s standards, we consider ourselves richly blessed by adoption and that far outweighs any earthly value.

Adoption is expensive. When everything is accounted for the total cost will be  $32,390. (There is a break down of all fees listed below.) Despite what most people think, the cost is not “buying a child”. Most of the costs are absorbed by extensive paperwork, home studies, physical exams, legal fees, visa’s, travel expenses and finally the orphanage gets a small amount to help with staff, food and clothing for the children.

We have currently covered close to $8,000 in adoption fees. This leaves a deficit of $23,646.60 left in adoption fees.

People say it takes a village to raise a child and with adoption this is even MORE true!

*When you contribute toward a family trying to bring home a child, you not only help that family achieve their dream of adoption but you truly become part of their story.

*You get to witness a tangible blessing of watching a family become complete through adoption.

*You get to smile along with them as they hold their child for the first time and celebrate the joyous milestones in their life.

* You enjoy seeing shared family photos knowing YOU helped make that dream become a reality!

Would you please consider taking part in our journey by coming beside us financially to help bring Maylei Grace home? Any donation large or small would be greatly appreciated. We are also thankful for any prayers covering our adoption as well.

We have created a special “family tree” that represents Maylei Grace’s village. On each heart shaped leaf will be the name of a family who donated to help bring her home. When it is complete she will see a beautiful tree full of the names of those who cared for her. Not only will she have a forever family but an extended family as well. Family is created by love not blood. We have been incredibly blessed to add some names to her family tree already! Thank you. 🙂

A little  more about ourselves and our home:

David and I were close friends in high school. We had a wonderful friendship and with time we grew into something much more. We always kept God in the center of our relationship and because of that, we have him to thank for our strong marriage today. David LOVES to cook (I am so thankful for this!), reading, classic movies and anything history related. Kristi loves art, reading, gardening, animals and spending time outdoors. Kara Lee loves coloring, playing with Legos, puzzles, playing outside and helping her mom in the garden.

Our farm is a little slice of paradise that we dreamed of for years. That dream finally became a reality when we bought our dream house around 6 years ago. It’s a cozy house nestled on 14 acres surrounded by woods and meadows complete with a fishing pond. No farm is complete without animals and we have chickens, ducks, horses, dogs and cats to make sure life is never boring! The farm keeps us entertained and we love it! What we are most excited about is the opportunity to share country life with our daughter. We can’t wait to see the look on her face when she holds a baby chick in her hands for the first time. She will get to have so many first time experiences and we look forward to being there for every single one of them!

We are both Christians and very active with our church. We intend to raise our daughter in a very positive church environment and speak with her daily about our beliefs. The church we attend has an AMAZING Children’s Ministry. We plan to raise her to be compassionate and caring toward others and have a high moral ground when faced with temptation. Most of all, we want her to know we are immensely proud of her and will be praying for her on a daily basis. Every challenge she faces will never be alone with God by her side.

We value family immensely and have a wonderful support system of both our parents nearby. We spend nearly every Saturday evening at David’s parents and usually have dinner with them and discuss the events from the week. We also spend every other Friday night with Kristi’s parents and do the same. We are a very close knit family and both sets of parents are very involved in our daughter’s life. They often take her to the park or do fun projects and crafts with her. They also plan to be just as involved with our second daughter once she comes home.
