Hello all! We are Matt and Heather Cobb from Yakima, Washington. We are in the process of adopting a little boy or girl age 0-3 with mild to moderate needs from India. We currently have two children, Ben (4) and Adelaide (2). In January of 2019, we jumped into this adoption journey. Our home study was approved in May and we are now prayerfully and patiently waiting to receive our first child referral.
Matt and I have both felt a strong conviction and desire to adopt ever since we were dating. Through His word and our local church body, God was teaching us more about his heart for the fatherless. The first couple of verses that began to stand out to us about orphans were Isaiah 1:17, calling us to “bring justice to the fatherless,” and James 1:27 that speaks of undefiled and pure religion being “to visit orphans and widows in their affliction.” Our pastor also spoke often of how we are adopted as children into the family of God when we follow Christ and trust Him as Lord (Ephesians 1:5). This picture of adoption is weaved throughout Scripture and became so clear to both of us.
God proceeded to teach us through our experiences. In the summer of 2009, as a newly engaged couple, Matt and I co-led a team to The Philippines from our church. We spent two weeks volunteering at an orphanage in Manila and then one week volunteering at a different orphanage in a small village on the island of Mindanao. During that time, God opened our eyes and hearts in a brand new way to this call for adoption. One little girl who was probably four years old completely captured us. She latched onto us during our time on Mindanao and we adored her and longed to be able to adopt her. Unfortunately, it was not even an option for us since The Philippines was not open to inter-country adoption at that time. Even still, our experiences in The Philippines led us to have a long, serious talk about how adoption would one day be part of our story.
Ten years later, here we are, even more passionate and excited about pursuing a child to adopt into our family forever. We are not ignorant of the fact that adoption can bring great challenges and hardships. We know many families who have adopted children both domestically and internationally. However, through knowing these families, we also see the immense amount of love and good, despite the hard times. Ultimately, in the eyes of God, adopting a child is always worth the cost. As Christians, we are to love what God loves and hate what He hates. We are to live our lives in a way that glorifies Him, ultimately showing the world around us how good He is. And one prime way to glorify Him is to love others fiercely. We believe that adoption is a beautiful example of each of things. We cannot wait to meet our daughter or son!
As you may be well aware, international adoptions are expensive endeavors. We anticipate that our total adoption costs will be around $40,000. Our first fundraising effort was a yard sale that was a lot of work but completely worth all of the time and effort. Now we are excited to share that Lifesong for Orphans has chosen us to receive a $4,000 matching grant, which means that the first $4,000 donated to us will be matched 100%. This is huge for us as we are gearing up for the remaining $26,000 of adoption costs. We truly appreciate all love and support you are able to give to us along the way!
