Choosing to adopt our second child

Briana Harger
Briana Harger Columbus, Ohio

Almost three years ago, God started our journey as a family of three. We were so excited that we would soon have a baby. However, that excitement very quickly turned to dismay. Briana was struggling, unable to function at the level she needed to because of persistent sickness and abnormal exhaustion. Each trimester brought more unwelcome symptoms. Additionally, the pregnancy took a toll on Briana's mental health. Through many talks and tears, we decided it was best for her to go back on medication during her second trimester. Stewart was supportive, but was taxed as he had now assumed the role of caregiver. On top of his 13-hour work days, he did all the housework since Briana was unable to.

After such a difficult pregnancy, we had to reconsider how we wanted our family to grow. We know that every pregnancy is different, but for Briana, even the possibility of having a similar pregnancy was enough to fill her with anxiety. She was sincerely concerned about her ability to care for our son if she was pregnant and, possibly, unable to even care for herself. We both spent months in prayer and in the Word seeking God on this issue. Briana went through guided prayer sessions to help overcome her fear of pregnancy. We tried to hear from God and truly understand what He wanted for us. We came to a point where we were open to pregnancy. Our fear and anxiety were alleviated, and we were trusting God. However, after continued discussions and prayer, we ultimately decided that conceiving another child wasn’t for us.

Before we were married, we both agreed that adoption was something we would like to do. It just turns out God wanted us to do it sooner rather than later. We are excited about continuing to grow our family exclusively through adoption. It would have been too easy to get caught up in life and allow the idea of adoption to fall by the wayside. But, we believe God has called us to adoption.

Thanks to the Christ-centered generosity of Crossroads East Church, we have been gifted a matching grant of $2,500. This means that any money raised through this fundraising site will be matched dollar-for-dollar up to $2,500. We are so grateful to Crossroads and Lifesong for Orphans for making this possible. But, we give all the glory to God. All of these good gifts come from Him.

We hope that you will prayerfully consider donating, and please continue to lift us up in prayer to the Lord. Thank you!
