The Bush Family’s 4th Adoption

Matthew Bush
Matthew Bush Jacksonville, Florida

Our family currently consists of 5: Myself (Matt), my wife Jessica, and our three children Sophie (6), Elijah (5), and Ezekyal (4). After 4 years as a family of 5, we will soon be a family of 6!

Our adoption story started in 2012 when we decided to adopt internationally from Ethiopia. We went through the process, got all of the paper work complete and the first part of the money paid only to find out that the country was shutting down their inter-country adoption program. In the middle of that process, my wife and I accepted a call to be international missionaries in Haiti and started an organization called All Things New that we still run today. Our calling was to an orpahnage in Haiti and to start a ministry around that orphanage. After we moved to Haiti, we moved from an international adoption to our first domestic adoption and we were matched to a birth mother in 2015 and Sophie was born in November of that year. When we received her passport, our family moved back to Haiti, but about a year after Sophie was born we started the process of adoption again thinking it would take a few years. Elijah was born 15 months and 1 day after Sophie and we adopted him and then moved our now family of 4 back to Haiti. 15 months and 5 days after Elijah was born, Ezekyal was born in Haiti at the home of some friends of ours. Through a lot of crazy circumstances that I cannot explain here, we began to pursue a domestic adoption of Ezekyal as permanent residents of Haiti. Political and social circumstances forced us to move our family, including Ezekyal because we had custody of him both in America and Haiti at this time, back to America. On March 31 of this year, after more than 3.5 years of Ezekyal living with us, his adoption was finalized and his last name officially became “Bush.”

In the midst of adopting Ezekyal, we knew that our family was not yet finished growing, and early in 2022 we were chosen by a birth mom to adopt another son. Her due date is June 6, 2022 and we are very excited.

Because of our position as missionaries that raise funds both for ourselves and for our ministry, we have not attempted to fundraise for any of our adoptions after Sophie was born. We decided to save up as much money as we could and take out loans for the rest. We did not want to seem greedy or to go to the same people for our ministry in Haiti and for our decision to adopt. Thanks to a combined $8000 matching grant from Orlando First Baptist Church + Lifesong for Orphans, however, we have the opportunity to raise $8,000 with all gifts tax deductible and Lifesong will match every donation dollar-for-dollar. Because of the matching funds and the blessing that this would be to our family, we have decided to try to raise money for this adoption.

We also know that when other people are a part of our adoption and our lives, you can be updated with what is going on and you can pray with us and for us through the process. Please, if you give to ATN, do not feel obligated to do this as well, but we did not want to miss this wonderful opportunity.

We believe that adoption is in the very heart of GOD as we are all adopted as His sons and daughters, and we cannot wait to meet our new son through this process. Thank you in advance for your prayers and for your financial donations to our family.

Bush Family Adoption Update

October 18, 2022

Hey guys,

It has been a couple of months since our last update, and we keep hoping that there is news to give you about the new adoption. There is not. Unfortunately, we are still waiting to either be matched with a new birth mom or to be paired with an abandoned child (we are first on this list when/if it happens). We are so appreciative for each of you who donated because the financial burden of adoption has been primarily lifted from us. This update is short, but I realized that we have not kept you up-to-date on what is going on so far. If you have any experience with adoption, you know so much of it is waiting, hoping, and then waiting a little more. That is where we are right now, and as soon as that chagnes we will update you again.

Bush Family Update

July 5, 2022

First of all, we apologize for not updating you about our adoption sooner. It took a while for all of us to figure out what was happening, and when we did it was then hard to know how to update others about it. The bottom line is that the birth mom who chose us changed her mind at the last minute. It was hard to hear mainly because of what we know about the situation and we were ready to welcome him into our family. We are now praying for him and his family, and that God would bless them beyond measure. It was a difficult blow, but we believe in God’s perfect timing, and we have 3 other children that definitely occupy our time.

What does this mean for our adoption? It simply means that we will be first in line for any child brought to our adoption agency that needs a home right away, and that we will be one of the families presented to birth mothers again starting right away. The adoption will happen, and it will still happen soon, just not as soon as we initially thought. Please pray for our family because the adoption process had gotten far enough along in the process that our children, Sophie, Elijah, and Ezekyal were excited about getting a new brother and they are a little confused. Please pray for patience for us as well and for a sweet time of growing together even more as a family while we wait.

Thank you again for all of you who donated to this adoption and for all of you that are praying for us. The donations were incredible because they were matched by LifeSong and it will cover a big chunk of our adoption expenses for our new baby which is a huge blessing because there are still expenses for Ezekyal’s ongoing adoption/immigration process as well as some expenses incurred due to this adoption not happening. Thanks again for everything and please feel free to reach out if you have any questions or anything. We appreciate everyone who has been a part of this, and we will update everyone in this group as soon as we know something about a new baby!

Still Waiting

June 7, 2022

First of all, thank you guys so much for donating to our adoption. It was such a blessing when LifeSong and FBC Orlando teamed together to offer us a matching grant, but it was your giving that allowed us access to those funds and it really means a lot! We have reached our goal of $8,000 which means that we received all of the matching funds that were offered with this grant. Thank you!

I was hoping to write this update once our son was born, but as you know the due date was yesterday, and we do not really have any news yet. As soon as we know something we will let you guys know, and we can wait with a lot less anxiety knowing that these funds are available to help us.
