Our adoption story is one of being chased by God, pursued to be obedient, and submitting to His call. There is really no simple answer to what led us to adopt. Life experience, the Lord’s mandate to care for the orphans and widows, the Holy Spirit’s persistence that this path was for us… it all factors in to a large degree.
We aren’t the typical adoptive family. Our little ones aren’t exactly little anymore, with one in college and the other two solidly in their teens. Our extended family doesn’t have a tradition of following God in caring for the orphans in this way. Yet when the Lord started to place adoption on our hearts, we knew it would be one of our deepest regrets if we didn’t follow Him in obedience.
Shane’s experience growing up in a home without a consistent father-figure propelled him to search out men who would guide him as a teenager. Thankfully, those men were Godly and filled a gap for him as they pointed him toward Jesus. In his mind, he had been figuratively adopted by these men and they forged a foundation of stepping up for others in need. When he started his career in education, it was in an area where many of the students came from single parent homes, lacking in male direction. He intentionally poured into these students, teaching them the lessons he’d learned from the men God had placed in his life.
The neighborhood we moved into in those early days of our marriage was populated by many gals who had been widowed or who had never married. Stepping in to care for the widows (James 1:27) became a joy as we were able to serve their needs uniquely. But it also prompted us to consider if God was calling us to do more… and if so, was adoption His plan?
We began to feel a pull toward growing our family, though we knew that we wouldn’t have any more children biologically. The Holy Spirit began to chase us in adoption. Books, sermons, Scripture, conversations… “adoption” was the recurring theme that we couldn’t shake. We had learned better than to run away from a calling when God so clearly placed it before us… and yet we delayed, waiting for the “perfect” time. The excuses all seemed to make sense until our children also started to feel the pull and we recognized that they were watching us to see how we would follow Him in obedience. We stopped waiting for all the pieces to fit together perfectly and submitted to Him. Almost immediately, we began to fall in love with this little one whose face we haven’t yet seen and whose name we don’t yet know. But he is a part of every prayer, every grace before a meal, every celebration we share as a family.
He is our son and we are so eager to meet him.
We are approved to adopt a little guy with mild special needs from China. We anxiously look forward to finding out who he is.
