We are the Banks family!
We are pastors with a lot of love to give. We have devoted our lives to serving the least, the last, and the lost. It is our belief that all of us are called to care for the fatherless, and we felt compelled to open our home. We didn’t set out on this journey with adoption in mind…. We decided to invite an orphan into our home for Christmas through an orphan hosting program in December of 2016.
We almost chose a different program…
We are very aware of the challenges that kids from traumatic backgrounds carry with them. We are also aware of how many dark skinned people there are in Eastern Europe! (virtually none!) As an inter-racial family, we didn’t want to bring an already vulnerable child into a situation where they would feel even more vulnerable. BUT… we decided to “just look”.
We opened up the photo listing, and right there in front of us was a photo of a little boy with beautiful chocolate eyes and dark black hair. His skin was nearly the same color as my own bi-racial children! In his profile we read about the difficulties he had faced all his life due to the color of his skin. God is so good. The very thing that almost kept us from hosting is in fact the very reason He led us there.
He fit like a puzzle piece into our home and into our family….
We watched as he slowly opened up to affection, and accepted the love we gave. We were overwhelmed at how quickly he was willing to give us the same love in return, even after all the experiences he has had in his short life. Sending him back home was the hardest thing I have ever done.
We decided to adopt him, and knowing that it would take quite a while to raise the funds, we brought him back to spend the summer with us…. and then brought him back again for Christmas in 2017.
We watched as his confidence grew….
Its a funny thing how a simple thing like “hope” can completely change a persons countenance. This boy who came to us so shy, hiding behind a sign in the airport when I met him…. running from new people at church, refusing to speak to anyone he hadn’t seen before is now very comfortable in new settings and is clearly loving being a part of our family.
We’re racing against time…
We are at the point in the process where we are ready to send our dossier. All the money we raise at this point needs to go toward that. Unfortunately, we cannot share any of this info with him and very soon he will find out that we are not spending the money to bring him back home for the summer. The only way for him to know that we are working instead to bring him home to stay is if our dossier is accepted by the Orphan Court. Then they will make him aware.
We have a $2500 matching grant!
We have been awarded a $2500 matching grant from Hope That Binds Fund, administered by Lifesong for Orphans. Please help us to get to our goal so that we can send the dossier and at least he will know that we haven’t forgotten about him… and we’re coming soon.
Thank you so much!
