Bringing Home Josiah

We are so excited to share with all of you the adoption story God is writing for our family and for His glory.  Jonathan and I have been quietly considering the possibility of adopting for several years. We started considering it seriously after Emily’s birth in 2015. We knew that we would pursue adoption; we just were not sure, initially, when we would begin the process.  Reading the book “Adopted for Life” by Russell D. Moore is what really opened our eyes to the priority of adoption for Christian families and churches. It was while reading that book during the summer of 2017 that God gave us affirmation of our family’s calling.

Although he is an ocean away, we are already so in love with this little boy. Josiah was born in August of 2016 and is being cared for by nannies in an orphanage in China. He was born with albinism, so we are preparing to stock up on plenty of sunscreen, sun hats, and super-cool toddler sunglasses.

Initially, and understandably, we had reservations related to the financial aspect of adoption. We chose to give that to God, and we are trusting that through obedience to His call, He will continue to provide. Thus far in the process, we have had very successful fundraisers. Our family and friends have been incredibly supportive and happy to help in our endeavors.  I have essentially taken on a part-time job of fundraising. I will forever be grateful for the opportunity and ability to labor for this child and for what this experience has taught me about grace and humility. It has been an incredible blessing to truly see Hebrews 10:24 lived out. “Let us be concerned for one another, to help one another to show love and to do good.”

The total cost for international adoption from China is roughly $36,000.  Of that total, we have raised $21,000, leaving $15,000 left to raise before we travel to China in early 2019 to bring Josiah home.  The number is daunting, but God is able. Praise Him!

We would like to invite you to join us on this journey.  First, please pray.  Pray specifically for Josiah by name and for us and our girls as we prepare to travel and prepare to welcome another child into our hearts and home.  Also, please consider seeking God’s guidance as to how He may have you assist us financially.  Jonathan and I do not take this request lightly.  Since marrying so young and striking out on our own to begin our lives together and our family, we have never asked anyone for anything.  This has been such a lesson in humility before the Lord. We do not know who God has already ordained to help us, but we are confident that He has a plan. We do not want our own pride to get in the way of His work. Perhaps He had been preparing your heart to join with us in this way.  If so, we will be eternally grateful.  A local church in our area, Warren Baptist, has partnered with Lifesong for Orphans and has awarded us a $3000 matching grant!  That means that the first $3000 donated will be matched dollar for dollar.  Praise God!  We are so grateful to the members of Warren Baptist Church and their adoption ministry.

Thank you for investing in His Kingdom though your prayers and finances.  It will be an investment with an eternal reward!  Our goal date to be fully funded is November 18, 2018, but funds will be accepted towards our adoption until he is home.  Please pray this entire process will continue to glorify God and fulfill His purposes.

China Said Yes!

November 1, 2018

Today we received our Letter of Acceptance from China, the document that we sign stating that “We agree to adopt the above child and promise to submit post-placement reports to China within required time.”  This is issued after the officials review all of our dossier (huge packet of paperwork we sent in August) and review our specific “match” with Josiah.  Y’all, they said yes!  He will be ours!  Glory to God.

Now we’re on to travel preparations!  The rest of our process includes visa applications and immigration paperwork in order to be issued Travel Approval.  That takes about 8 weeks (7 more from where we are now), and we should get on a plane about 2 weeks after that.  9 WEEKS!!!!  Of course, that’s an average and not a guarantee, but we will likely travel mid-January.  It’s getting so close!

We started this journey 15 months ago, so I’m still trying to wrap my mind around the fact that we’re nearing the end.  More than that, though, we’re praying that God will prepare our hearts to be Josiah’s mama, daddy, and sisters.  God created us to be part of a family, but Josiah will certainly experience grief when he leaves the orphanage and his nanny.  Please join us in prayer for his little heart as he is spending his last weeks in the only environment he has every known.  God is faithful, and we have seen His hand in every step of this journey.  We continue to be so grateful for the story He is writing for our family and for all of the people who have come along side of us.

It’s little reminders like this sweet note from a friend that have continually set my eyes on God though all of it…

“I love helping! We’re sisters in Christ.  This little boy is part of my family now, too.”

Y’all, God is good.  He is righteous, sovereign, and worthy of all praise.
