In an orphanage halfway around the world sits a little boy. He longs for love.. he longs for a mother to rock him, to nurture him when he cries… he longs for a father to provide security, to provide strength… he longs for sisters who are overbearing and gentle all at the same time… he longs for a brother to giggle late into the night with, a constant comrade. And he doesn’t know it yet. But we long for him, too.
We think of him almost more than we think of ourselves. We pray for him so very often. And we long for the day he will come home.
We can’t wait to show him just how loved he is. Does he know that he has been the main topic of conversation in our home for just over two years? Does he know how ridiculous we sound practicing his native language just so we can tell him how loved he is? Does he know that we’ve been preparing our palates to enjoy the delicacies of his home-land frequently? We can’t wait to line up all the action figures in his room and have a battle royale.. or spend hours on end creating with Lego’s.. or spend countless minutes at the park jumping from one activity to the next. Oh the meals we will share around the kitchen table.. where it’s not Martha Stewart worthy by any means, but it’s chaotic, fun and warm all in one. There is a world of affection and tireless devotion waiting for him in this nothing-out-of-the-ordinary suburban home.
But there he sits. On the other side of the world. And our hearts break to know he, quite possibly, has never been rocked to sleep. His cries might have gone unanswered for so long, that he just keeps his pain, hunger and feelings of despair to himself. He’s never felt the loving embrace of a mother’s arms.. and quite certainly never had his dad’s beard tickle his cheeks as he is scooped up in a bear hug.
And as much as we can’t wait to shower him with love, we know that we can’t be everything this precious little one needs. There is no way that we can fulfill his every need. But there is ONE who can. And we can’t wait to show him the love of Jesus. How sweet it will be to share the Gospel with him in car-rides to school.. or while at the table coloring in coloring books.. or while making random play-doh creations. We love our little boy so very much, but we know that God loves him infinitely more.
We are so humbled by the generosity that so many have shown in helping us bring our boy home. There has been a multitude of blessings on this journey, and we’re blessed to have tangibly witnessed Jehovah-Jireh.. the Lord provides.
