I always knew that adoption would be part of my journey one day. Nash had honestly never really had it on his radar. Shortly after we got married in 2014, we began praying for a family. It became evident to us after over a year of praying and wanting a baby, that God's timing for our family was different than ours. We knew that a family was in our future and just chose to trust His timing.
In 2016, God answered our prayer for children in a way we had not planned. He called us to live in an orphanage in Haiti for two years with fourteen children ages 4-12. It was during our time in Haiti that God really taught us what loving children meant. We spent two years loving those children as if they were biologically ours. It was during this time that God revealed His call of adoption to Nash. I clearly remember the days and weeks that I watched a change take place in His heart as God revealed to him what His plan for our family was. At the end of our commitment in Haiti, we knew what we were being called to do. We knew that while we could not adopt the children He had allowed us to love in Haiti, that He was calling us to adopt a baby in the United States. We are so thankful for our time in Haiti and the lessons we learned about each other, parenting, and love while there. We keep in touch with the kids there and lovingly refer to them as our "First 14". Even though they will never live in our home with us, they are absolutely part of our family and will be this child's biggest fans. The kids in Haiti always tell us that when we have a child of our own, they will be our #15, and we are excited about expanding our family and welcoming that #15 home.
We don't yet know what this adoption process will hold, but we are thankful for the call to adopt and excited about one day finally Bringing Baby Barber Home.
