Baby Hsiang is Home!

Callie Hsiang Knoxville, Tennessee

In December of 2014, we found out that Callie has a genetic disorder. In the process of decorating our Christmas tree, we got a phone call from our genetic counselor that this disorder could be passed on to future children. Our friends Kent & Ana came over that night and grieved and prayed with us, processing together that our plans for starting our family would look different than we had originally thought. Over the past few years, we have grieved, processed, clung to the Lord, waited, prayed, and grew in excitement about our adoption.

We are passionate about adoption because it depicts the gospel. Through the cross, God adopts us as his children. Through lots of prayer and conversations with family and community, we felt that God was leading us to grow our family through adoption.

Here is where our story might differ from many other adoption stories. We were matched with a birth mother through Bethany Christian Services in the summer of 2018. She was 16 weeks pregnant when we met her and she chose us to adopt her son. We spent that next few months getting to know her, the birth father, and their families. The most beautiful baby boy we have ever laid eyes on was born on 1/1/19. We spent 2 days and nights in the hospital with him and took him home with us on 1/3/19. It was kind of crazy how quickly we fell in love with him, I’ve never experienced that kind of love before. Unfortunately, we got the call we feared the most from our case worker late the night of January 3rd that the birth mother had changed her mind and wanted to parent the child. Needless to say, we were devastated. We spent the next two months trying to grieve and process and suffer well while clinging to the Lord and His goodness and His faithfulness. We knew that at some point God would bring redemption to our story, we just had no idea what that would look like.

Fast forward to the afternoon of February 25th, we found out from our case worker that the baby’s birth mother had signed her surrender rights that morning and we were now in a 72 hours revocation period where she could revoke her surrender. We were completely shocked, but immediately put our guard up. Of course, we did not hesitate when asked if we still wanted to adopt this baby. We love him so much and that love hadn’t stopped just because the adoption was disrupted. The next 72 hours were the longest 72 hours of our entire lives, but that revocation period passed without the birth mother changing her mind. We got to bring baby Hsiang home on Friday March 1st, his two month birthday! We did not expect the Lord to redeem our story in this way, but we are so thankful that He chose to do it this way. We are incredibly thankful for our son and we cling to the truth that the Lord is just as good and just as faithful even if our story had not ended this way.

We were fortunate enough to be awarded a $2,000 matching grant from Lifesong for Orphans Adoption Fund. We are still short on our fundraising goal for this adoption and we are hoping your generosity will help us fulfill this $2000 matching grant opportunity and even exceed it. Thank you so much for reading about our story and for your generosity and prayers!
