Adopting again and from China?! Believe us! We are the most surprised.
With already having 4 kids - one who we finalized our adoption of through county foster care in December 2015 - we assumed that we would remain a family of 6 for a long time - maybe forever. Pamela follows a lot of adoption and orphan advocacy groups through social media and discovered an infant who had recently had heart surgery and needed a sponsor to finance her recovery time in a healing home through Love Without Boundaries, an amazing non profit that you have to check out. Convinced that we needed to sponsor this little girl, we became her sponsors in August 2016. Soon after, we began entertaining the idea of adopting her, not knowing if that is even possible. After finding out that it was possible, though unlikely, because many factors would have to come together, we decided that God was calling us to adopt from China, whether it was this little girl that we currently sponsor or another child. We have raced through paperwork and finally received a LID date for China on 1/10/17. That means our paperwork is complete and correct and accepted in China. We are continuing to pray as a family that God would make it clear who the child is that He has planned for us, knowing that His ways are always above our own.
While this is how we ended up with a dossier logged in China, our love for adoption, foster care, orphan care and child welfare, in general, goes way back. As a youth pastor about 10 years ago, a 13 year old girl from our youth group, Amy, needed a foster home, when a temporary living arrangement was ending and her parents were still getting the help they needed. The day she told us - 5/5/2007 - was the day we knew God was telling us she was supposed to live with us - while we ourselves were only in our early 20's and had only been married for a relatively short time. Long story short, she moved in with us in July of that year and stayed with us for 2 years, before being reunified with her father. She is now a thriving 23 year old college student who loves the Lord. After 2 biological children came into our family in 2010 (Ben) and 2011 (Katie), we began considering adoption through local foster care. We assumed that we would maintain birth order and adopt a baby. A friend called Pamela in October of 2013 and said she knew we wanted to foster/ adopt a baby, but she asked us to pray about adopting a 7 year old girl who needed a forever home. We said we would pray about it --- and then decided we should actually pray about it! So many unknowns! Two days later we met her at a local park and decided to pursue adopting her. She joined our family as a foster daughter in June of 2014. As most foster situations are, it was complicated with a lot of meetings and court dates, but finally Mikayla officially joined our family in December 2015. In the meantime, we had another biological child, Evan, in 2014. Since Amy had moved back with her dad in 2009, we went from zero kids to 4 kids when Evan was born in under 5 years! Our heads were spinning with transition for a long time! In the summer of 2016, Pamela seriously considered starting classes part time to become a nurse, but became convinced that God was closing that door. A few weeks later, we began sponsoring the little girl and we were thinking about adoption again! Last summer, we would have said there is no way adoption is in our near future. While not part of OUR plans, we know this is from the Lord and feel compelled to obey, even though we know adding a 5th child to our family will be another big transition and we aren't sure where all of the dollars will come from.
We believe that every child deserves a loving and forever family. The family is God's design and is the best place for a child to thrive. While we love adoption for the way it meets a crucial need for a child, we also love the picture that adoption is for a believer's relationship with God. In Ephesians 1:5, Paul writes, "In love he predestined us for adoption as sons through Jesus Christ."
In addition, our family supports two girls from Peru through Compassion International. Pamela visited Peru to meet one of our sponsored girls back in 2013. We began sponsoring our 2nd compassion child after that trip.
Pray for us! God knows exactly what we need and His timing is always perfect. Pray that He would prepare each of the members of our family for whichever child He brings to us. Pray that the specific child would be a clear choice to us.
We have been so blessed to have worked with some hard working, caring professionals along this journey. We completed our home study with Across the World Adoptions in Pleasant Hill, CA and will be adopting through Madison Adoption Associates in Wilmington, DE. We highly recommend these agencies.
