We’re adopting from South Korea!

Han Shim Great Mills, Maryland

(EDIT: Thank you all for helping us reach our fundraising goal!)

Hello from Han and Eui!

We are very excited to announce that we are adopting a boy from South Korea!  It was always our desire to have children and when we were dating, both of us had also talked about wanting to someday adopt children.  We had planned to wait until after we had biological children, but after years of trying, we felt it was finally time to move forward with our long-held desire to adopt.

We felt led to adopt from Korea because of our own Korean heritage.  After finishing required paperwork and our home study last December, we waited for a match.  Then in July, we got a call from our adoption worker that we’d been matched with an adorable boy named HaeSol who was born in November of 2020!

Although we’re matched with a child, we still have about 2- 5 months before we’ll be told to fly to Korea to meet our son and bring him home.  Again, we are praying for and trusting in God’s perfect timing.

We would really appreciate prayers during this adoption.  If you feel led to pray with us, please pray for:

·             • HaeSol’s growth and development:  He had some alcohol and tobacco exposure while in the womb up to his 5th month of pregnancy.  While he appears to be healthy, effects of alcohol & tobacco exposure in the womb can show up years later.  Please pray for God’s healing in HaeSol.

·             • Everything that still needs to happen before we can bring HaeSol home:  We’re currently waiting for the Korean government’s approval to adopt, followed by two adoption court hearings in Korea we must appear at.

·             • God’s continued provision for any needs: financial, educational, and otherwise.

Finally, as you probably know, international adoption is costly.  Adoption from Korea typically costs over $40,000.  But God has already provided us with a “matching grant” of $5,000 at Lifesong for Orphans.  So if you feel led to make a tax-deductable charitable donation to help with this adoption, then you can make a donation by following the instructions at the bottom of this page.

However, we’d like to emphasize that the most important thing we and our future son will need during this long adoption process are your prayers.  Thank you for supporting us in whatever ways you can!

We’re in Korea!

April 6, 2022

We’re in Korea! Before the 1st court hearing date, we were allowed two 1-hour long visits with our child. What a mixture of emotions the first visit was for us!  We wanted to just pick HS up and hug him, but he made it clear that there was no way he was going to let that happen!  He didn’t cry when he saw us, but he did keep his distance.  We asked his FM (foster mom) what sort of things scare him, and she said he’s scared of unfamiliar people and places.  (Uh-oh.)  We had to work really hard to engage him since he was so wary of us. We succeeded in catching his attention here and there with the toys in the room and the toys that we brought with us, but he stuck to his FM pretty much like glue.

The 2nd visit was slightly better.

We heard that HS liked fruit, so Eui had brought some cut-up strawberries for him.  At first, he wanted only his FM to feed him the strawberries (in Korea, it’s common for moms to feed their toddlers rather than letting them feed themselves), but he eventually did let Eui put some strawberry pieces into his mouth.  He would shrug both his shoulders after eating one, showing that he liked it.  It was so cute!

HS  didn’t want to stay in the room we were in, so we went out into the hallway/lobby area. Of course, when we were out there, he only wanted his FM to touch him.  At some point later, he did actually let Eui hold one of his hands when going up the stairs, but only if his FM was already holding his other hand.

There was a little divider wall in front of the bathrooms, so Eui had an idea to hide behind it and said “kka-kkoong!” (“Peek-a-boo” in Korean).  HS actually tried to find Eui and followed her around that divider wall with a smile on his face!  (It was the first time we’d ever seen him smile, so it felt like a win!)

PRAYER REQUESTS:

We know that separating from his foster mom will be very difficult for HS, no matter what. Please pray that there will be healing from the trauma that HS will experience, and for him to begin to grow attached to us.

Pray that we know how to comfort him and help him during his grief after custody day.

We are so thankful for your prayers!

We’re going to Korea!

February 15, 2022

Dear Family and Friends,

We just found out we have our first cour date: March 31! That means we’ll be traveling to Korea next month to meet HaeSol for the first time! After we go to court on March 31, we wait for our 2nd court date, which will take place about 4-6 weeks later. That will be the day we officially get custody of HaeSol and get to bring him home! We are very excited…and nervous!

Thank you so much for your prayers for us and HaeSol up to this point. This whole process has definitely been a practice in trusting God and waiting on Him. We’d appreciate prayers for…

-God’s favor with our travel plans

-HaeSol’s growth and development

-the COVID situation in Korea to improve

-us to know how to preapre for HaeSol’s arival

Thank you again for supporting us through your prayers!

Love,

Eui and Han

We’ve met our fundraising goal!

December 8, 2021
Thank you to everyone who donated towards our adoption costs!  Honestly, saying thank you just doesn’t seem like enough!

God provided through friends and even complete strangers (yet not true strangers since they’re part of the body of Christ, and so really are extended family too).  While we knew God would provide for our needs, we were still taken by surprise!

We don’t have any new update on the adoption timeline yet — We’re still just waiting to get word from Korea about when we should fly there.  We’re hoping it’ll be in the next month or two, but even if it isn’t, we trust it will happen when it needs to happen.  And we will definitely post an update when it does happen!

If you’re looking for a way to help vulnerable children, like orphans, please prayerfully consider donating to Lifesong.  They don’t just help with adoptions.  They help support orphaned children in many different countries and in many different ways, such as providing education and vocational training. See more about what they do at https://lifesong.org/

Please continue to keep HaeSol and our adoption process in prayer.  Thank you to everyone for your support!
