In the Summer of 2018 we decided to participate in an orphan hosting program. We thought we would open our home to a child in need, show them the love of Jesus, help them have a memorable Summer and that would be that. We were matched with a 12 year old boy, "AJ" and he arrived in June. We were not sure what to expect and we were nervous to welcome an "older" boy into our home. But, the instant we met him we could tell he was such a sweet kid. He fit right into our crazy family from day one. Within two weeks of our hosting him; we felt very strongly that God was telling us to pursue adopting him. We began the homestudy process in July, and had our application to adopt him submitted to Latvia on September 28, 2018. We expected that we would be traveling to bring him home within a couple of months. However, a month later the government of Latvia passed a bill that made several changes to the adoption laws. One of which was that no child who resided in a foster home could be adopted internationally. For over a year we have "fought" to bring our son home. We were able to host him again that Winter and again in the Summer of 2019. Each time we had to say goodbye to him it was more and more difficult for him and us. After we hosted "AJ" this past Summer and he returned to Latvia; he asked his social worker if he could be moved to an orphanage so that he could be adopted into our family. He has persistently asked his social worker to help him be adopted into our family. This week we received the news that his request to be moved to an orphanage is being honored. If all goes as planned we will be going to Latvia as a family of 6 and returning as a family of 7 before Christmas! Latvia requires that both parents go to Latvia for TRIP 1 for 2-3 weeks. We would like to take all of our children to bring their brother home. One parent is required to return with AJ for TRIP 2, which is only about 1 week. Then one parent is required to return with AJ to Latvia for TRIP 3, which is only for 3 days. Each trip requires airfare, lodging, meals, translation fees, attorney fees, adoption agency fees etc...In total we have been told to anticipate expenses to come to close to $40,000. We have paid $16,500 of that to date and have been able to save another good sum. Lifesong for Orphans has graciously offered us a matching grant of $3000. Meaning that if we can raise $3000 in tax-deductible donations; they will give us another $3,000 toward our adoption. This would be a tremendous help to us.
