Adopting! – Our next great adventure

God is calling us to change a life!

Season’s Greetings! My son and I are on another great adventure! We have partnered with the Morgan Hill Children’s Foundation (MOHIC) in Lagos, Nigeria to adopt a little girl. Already, we’ve sacrificed a lot to pay over $10,000.00 out of pocket to cover the initial fees.

The plight of orphans is heartbreaking. Many issues stem from lacking basic resources that come from a loving home. Without a family to provide and protect them, these children are forced to live at the lowest levels in society just to survive. Crime and poverty become a way of life. Violence and human trafficking is common and because they are orphaned, education is abandoned which further prevents them from finding a way out of poverty into healthy homes.

For most orphans there is little hope unless they are rescued and adopted. Once they are taken in by orphanages, children no longer have to focus on meeting their basic needs. Instead they can learn to follow simple social rules. Still, due to the number of children in each facility, orphanages around the world are limited in their ability to nurture each child. This means although the basic needs are met orphaned children still suffer from many developmental delays.

On the contrary, children adopted into loving families have been shown to lead very productive lives. Adopted kids experience rapid growth and development in all areas because they receive personal attention. Generally within the first few years of placement, adopted children "catch up" to their peers in many ways and have even been shown to excel in their fields of interest. Maya Angelou, Steve Jobs, and Nat King Cole are just a few people who have gone on to do extraordinary things with their lives after they were adopted. In addition, because of the rigorous process involved in adoption, adoptive parents are overjoyed to welcome their new child into their lives and the entire family, including biological children, experience a wealth of joy and satisfaction.

We are now about 8 months into our journey. Remi and I are both Nigerian-American dual citizens so we are uniquely qualified to help a child from Nigeria transition to life in Atlanta, Georgia. We have no trouble replicating the comforts from Nigeria because they are our favorites as well! We have partnered with MOHICs to rescue a child and give her a forever family! MOHIC is the leading authority in inter-country adoption between the US and Nigeria and they have been instrumental in advocating for the rights of children and the advancement of the adoption program in Nigeria.  Please partner with us to raise the last $15,000.00 to bring our girl  home. These fees will cover foreign agency procedures as well as the immigration processes necessary to bring her back home to Atlanta, Georgia.  Any donation is greatly appreciated. Remi and I can't wait to share this journey with you!

STRIPE charges an online processing fee (2.2% +.30 USD per transaction). Your donations will be decreased by this amount. You may also send a check payable to “Lifesong for Orphans”. In the memo line please write “Guerrero 7432”, to ensure it is credited to our account. Please mail to Lifesong for Orphans, PO Box 40, Gridley, IL 61744.

A family full of color

DECEMBER 29, 2017

Hey guys. I’ve been looking for a meaningful way to share this journey with you. Nigeria can feel far away if you are not connected to the culture. So here are a few facts about the country.

Nigeria is located in West Africa between Benin and Cameroon

The country is twice the size of California with roughly 180 million people

There are three major tribes ; Ibo, Hausa, and Yoruba but over 500 sub tribes that have their unique way of food, dress, and language. With over 500 tribes their are several things that make each tribe unique, but there are also many things that unite the people to make Nigeria one of the most prosperous countries in Africa.  A sense of Honor, a love of country and family, and a celebration of culture are common among all of the tribes.

One traditional way of showing pride in country and heritage is to wear colorful material sewn in different ways. These materials have very bright colors and vibrant patterns. Clothes that are sewn from these materials would be used to attend special events such as weddings or graduations, or in our case, the introduction of a new family member. Each family would chose a specific pattern then everyone would by the same material and design their own outfits. During large gatherings you can identify family members because they will be wearing matching material. It is a beautiful and colorful display that unites and inspires all members to celebrate and Thank God for what He has done.

So I decided to take some of those same family materials from my extended family and create little decorative pillows to give away. You can place these pillows anywhere in the home or office to show that you are part of our family. That way, you can have something to show and share with friends and family that you are a part of a loving international family that came together to rescue an orphan.

These pillows are for anyone who wants one  :0)  Please feel free to email me and I will ship you one of these handmade pillows for free. Thank you for joining us as we rescue an orphan and change a life!

* please note as these are authentic material colors and patterns will vary

Preparation

March 5, 2018

So it’s been a while since I’ve left an update because nothing exciting has taken place. I mostly fill out paperwork and clarify information. This is just sort of the waiting time for Remi and I. My heart goes out to our little girl. We pray that she is doing well wherever she is and that God is preparing her heart and her body for the transition to a new life. She is constantly in our prayers, but I know this time is needed to make her transition as smooth as possible. Yesterday we cleaned up her room and set out a few things she might play with. We haven’t met her yet, so we don’t know what makes her feel special. But in the meantime we continue to do the hard work to lay the foundation that will be critical during the first few years. Its funny that we call waiting hard work, but sometimes doing nothing is harder than doing something. It requires patience and faith in the process and in God who is ordering the process. It has been encouraging though, to watch as things slowly unfold because we are constantly reminded that God is detail oriented. So to my tribe of two, I am proud of what wew are becoming. And to the soon coming tribe of three you will be able to build something beautiful because of the work Remi and I continue to do behind the scenes each day. And to anyone who is considering supporting us in prayer and /or financially thank you for what you are willing to sacrifice today so that tomorrow can be better.

Thank you for partnering with us as we rescue and orphan and bring her home!

35 years of trusting God

January 31, 2018

I’ve been trusting God for 35 years now. And it’s been amazing. Well, to be honest, all of it hasn’t been amazing, but if I were to sum it up I would use the words dynamically consistent. Because in every trial the cycle continues. I am faced with a trial of some sort, I freak out, I pray and trust God, I wait, I wait some more, I scour the bible for pormises to stand on, I wait a little more, I begin to question EVERYTHING, then I low key give up, AND God shows up like “WHAT”. Then I humbly give praise and honor AND remember we’ve been here before. To be honest I don’t know that the cycle ever changes but #ARBSAYS the highs and lows get less extreme. And I do find that, I can weather the storms a little bit better now. I’m happy to be in this place as I complete this adoption because I know I have to teach my children to face the same cycles in their lives. God is faithful, it’s a lesson that is hard to teach with words, but experiences are undeniable. I now have 35 years of experiences. So I can say, I’ve been young and now I’m old-ER, but never have I seen the righteous forsaken nor their seed begging for bread. But I will also add that my definition of “forsaken” has matured over time and THAT is why my God is still AMAZING

Thank you for partnering with us as we seek to change the life of an orphan!

What I have to give is simple but more than enough

December 29, 2017

As a single mom, I’ve been asked why I am adopting another child. There are a million reasons but the main reason is this. I can change a life. In the simple and complex ways. I can provide food and shelter. I can protect from violence and exploitation. I  have an endless supply of smiles and I am a hugging machine! But I’ve also experienced loss and abandonment. I recovered from deep betrayal and I have learned compassion. So I am ready to walk with her through the road of recovery. Along my road I’ve shared life lessons with everyone I meet. This time I’m ready to share them with a child. My son and I have had an incredible journey so far and I am amazed at how awesome he is. I can’t wait for the two of us to use these life lessons to teach and to heal our little girl and to watch how she is transformed by love. Please support us in this journey as we partner with the morganhillchildrenfoundation.com to rescue an orphan. Your donation will change her life.
