A Family Calling

Kent Davenport Fort Morgan, Colorado

Before we were married we would talk often of family and children. We had planned out when we would start having kids, what their names would be, and how many we would have. Of course, real life doesn’t go according to plan. We’ve been married for 13 years now, and for 12 of those years we’ve known God was calling us to adopt.

After church one Sunday we both had a strong sense that “one day” we would adopt children. It was sometime in the distant future, after we were done having our own kids, that we would begin the adoption journey. It wasn’t something we talked about often in those first few years as it was something “far off in the future.”

A few years after that initial calling, our daughter had an assignment for pre-school, she was to draw a picture of what she wanted to do when she grew up. Our 4-year-old daughter drew a picture of a huge house. When asked what she drew, she said it was a home for all the kids without a home. We hadn’t talked to her about adoption yet, but God had put it in her heart as He had ours. Maybe adoption wasn’t something so far away. And we also began to feel like we would be adopting a sibling group. God was preparing us.

Since then, we’ve bought a house, egressed basement windows, saved some money, and adjusted some life rhythms in preparation for adoption. Our boys also often ask “when are we going to adopt?” About a year ago, we felt compelled, “now is the time to start.” And so, we began to research all the ins-and-outs. While Andrea had always leaned toward international adoption, the cost of it had always seemed prohibitive to me. But as we researched, participated in informational meetings, and had conversations, God changed my heart.

As we prayed, researched, asked questions, talked to several agencies, God has led us to enter the Taiwan program through Lifeline Children’s services. And we are convinced that we are to adopt a sibling group of two. Financially, that is a scary endeavor, the cost still looks prohibitive when just looking at the numbers. And yet, God has always proven himself faithful in the past. We firmly believe that God will prove himself faithful by providing for our every need in this as well.

We are excited to share that we have been awarded a $12,000 matching grant from Legacy685 Fund, administered by Lifesong for Orphans. That means the first $12,000 donated will be doubled! With what we have paid already and what we currently have saved, if we can raise $20,000 and add the $12,000 grant, most of the costs of the adoption will be provided for. Thanks be to God!

August 2023 Update

August 16, 2023

It’s been a long time since we have shared an update. That is because until last week we didn’t have an update to share.

On Friday we received a call from our adoption agency. We were told that we were not matched with the two little boys we were waiting expectantly for. The good news is that another family was chosen and these boys will be getting a new family.

We are still processing this. No doubt, it feels like a “loss” to us. For 5 months we had been waiting with expectation. And now nothing. We are holding so many things in tension – trusting God in the things we do not understand, but also grieving over what will not be. At times we are sad and sometimes mad, feeling like we took several steps backwards in the process. There is a bit of relief knowing that we have more time to raise money, and a bit of guilt for feeling relieved.

We are asking all the questions – “did we get something wrong?” “Are we sure we are supposed to do this?” “Is Taiwan really where God wants us to adopt from?”… all the questions that come out during hard times… And yet even in our asking, our trust in God and his ability to provide for us has not wavered.

We are now waiting to receive new files for other children with no particular timeline outlined. Please be praying for our family in this season.

Update 2 – April 2023

April 18, 2023

We know, we know, two weeks ago we said we had one week to prayerfully consider these kids and make a decision. Several people have asked what is going on.

Well, there was a delay in having the files assessed by specialists. We received the assessments last night and they were helpful. Having prayed about these specific boys for over two weeks now, those assessments didn’t change anything for us.

This morning we informed our agency that we would like to request to be matched with these boys.

We are currently working on putting together our matching request packet. Once submitted, we will hear back in 1-3 months about whether or not we have been selected as a good fit for these boys.

Keep praying with us! We know God is faithful and we are trusting Him in all the unknowns ahead. We trust that if there is a family out there better suited to care for these boys that the door for us will be closed. We trust that if these boys are not a good fit for our family, that God will close the door. And we trust that God will provide for every need whenever and whoever we adopt.

Update – April 2023

April 3, 2023

All of a sudden stuff is happening!

We completed our homestudy in January, but there were some delays in getting the Hague review completed. Just a week ago we were still praying that something would happen, because, well, it felt like nothing was happening.

All at once, things started happening.

We received a phone call Thursday afternoon about a sibling group our agency was advocating for. They asked us if we would consider looking at the overview files. I asked about our status since we hadn’t officially been moved to the next phase. We were told our homestudy had passed the Hague review and had been submitted to the state and pending approval.

We had 24 hours to decide whether or not we wanted to view the entire file.

It all felt surreal! All of our classes were about hypotehtical situations with hypothetical children, but now we were reading about real kids…

We thought and talked and prayed and decided to move forward. That next day when we communicated our desire to view the entire file we heard that our homestudy had been certified by our state, and our agency would be sending it to USCIS with our application. Progress with the paperwork! (a bigger deal than it sounds)

But even bigger, we are seriously considering these two children and their file has been placed on hold for us. Crazy!

Their files are currently being reviewed by medical professionals who specialize in international adoption. We have a week to continue to process, pray, and consult with professionals before we must decide whether to request to be matched with these children or decide that they won’t be the right fit for our family, or that our family isn’t the right fit for them.

Please join us in prayer over these next few days. All of a sudden big decisions are before us, heavy decisions.

Thank you to everyone who has been supporting us already in so many ways: prayer, fincances, caring for our kids us as we take classes and attend meetings, and all the other ways you continue to love us. Adoption takes more than a family, it takes community. We know we can’t do this on our own.
