Sometimes our journeys take us to a place where all obstacles are shoveled away and no excuses are to be found. A beautiful and timely invitation extended. Our next “yes” was said.
A year and a half ago our hearts were broken and our eyes opened at the realization that an estimated 80% of children living in orphanages in Haiti actually have living parents. Parents who love their children but lack the resources and discipleship training to care for them properly. They forfeit their rights and place them in orphanages where they believe the children will receive better care than the family can provide. Many parents make frequent visits to the orphanages to see their children. Can you imagine not being able to share your love with your children on a daily basis? Thinking of being in this situation is heart wrenching. What is often missing is a job and discipleship training. An opportunity to provide basic food, shelter, clothing, and education for the children they love.
I didn’t know what GOD would do with all that we were learning, but as I wrote it in my journal, I prayed. Asking the Lord to use our family. I shared my heart with just a few close friends.
A few months later Darin and I were invited to Haiti on a vision trip. On that trip, we were made aware that Mike and Amy, directors at the Lifesong MBO campus, had a desire to build a boutique on their campus. This would be a place where they would sell Haitian made goods creating jobs for parents as well as gaining wisdom through discipleship training.
So our journey began with a mountain. The fundraising necessary to build the boutique was $18,000 in 6 weeks. A bit overwhelming to think of raising that amount of money in such a short time. But God! The Lord brought in $24,000 in 5 weeks! MORE money in LESS time!! ONLY GOD!!
Fast forward….In January 2019 the invitation was once again presented to travel to Haiti to see the finished boutique and take the next unknown steps. The boutique was not ready, but God had something thrilling to show us!
While there, conversations with directors Mike and Amy presented an opportunity for a 2 month stay to fill in for a couple working there. Jacky and Anna, who are full time missionaries on campus, will be gone for several months and desired someone to fill in for them. This would lighten the workload for Mike and Amy and give us the opportunity to encourage them.
The Timing of this was so incredibly beautiful to us. We were there at the time the meeting was taking place for Jacky and Anna to be preparing to go home to the states. It was also just days before we left for Haiti that Darin lost his job. A situation that could have rocked our family, instead cleared our path to go with open hands to anything GOD had in store.
Darin and I prayed about it for a few days and felt that The Lord made the way very, very clear. They have a need and we now have the flexibility, desire and the heart to say “YES!”.
So, what exactly will we be doing in Haiti?
While we will have specific goals, our main goal is to serve God by partnering with Mike and Amy as they lead 70 Haitian employees throughout the day. This will look different each day.
Darin will be highly valuable in many areas using his CPA and MBA skill set. He will be assisting with accounting needs, which is one role that Jacky has on campus. He will be working with an outside accounting firm on payroll and taxes as well as helping the Haitian employees to set up bank accounts. He is looking forward to mentoring Solomon, a Haitian employee, on Quickbooks. Eager to assist in leading teams as they come visit on campus as well as using his experience with any construction needs as they arise. He hopes to use his Apiary skills in setting up bee equipment and training some local Haitians to keep bees!
My first priority will be caring for our children. I also plan to assist with the organizing and set up of the new boutique. They have asked for assistance with managing, marketing and operating of the boutique. A certificate of achievement for 3 day sewing classes is highly valued by the Haitians. Knowing the power of a training certificate, Mike and Amy suggested that I offer a few training classes in the new sewing studio above the boutique. This is thrilling for me to consider. It’s something I’m passionate about, helping other women, in the long run, keep their children. This is the EXACT vision the Lord placed on my heart 1.5 years ago and I can’t believe I actually get to do it!!
The kids will join us in whatever the day has planned. They are looking forward to helping with the goats, chickens, garden and other projects that come up. We are all going to grow in the area of flexibility and serving, I can assure you! I pray that we grow in our Love for others and that we are open to all that God has to teach us. We have so much to learn!!!
We set out to leave March 5th and come back to the states on May 4th. The funds raised will be used for various expenses inlcuding travel, housing and insurance while in Haiti for 2 months. We are thankful for your prayers and support!
