When 1 adoption became 3

Jocelyn Piper
Jocelyn Piper Chatham, Illinois

We are the Pipers!  We are a blended family of 7, going on 8!  Troy brought in 2 amazing kids, And I, Jocelyn had 1, we knew we would eventually grow our family by adoption someday.
When we decided we were finally as ready as we were ever going to be to adopt, we went in with our blindfolds on.  I say this in a very positive tone, I feel like, you almost have to start and dive in with a bit of a naive spirit, with little to no expectations other than, I am going to bring a new child into our family.

We quickly figured out that you had to have some specific information to start the process, like WHERE you were going to adopt from and then what, if any, special needs you would consider.  Que the research and prayers!!

After assessing things like insurance, our life, and how clueless we are, we agreed that we would be willing to checkmark next to most significant needs!  And because of this, we decided to choose a country in Asia as their kids were only moderate to severe needs, aka the “unadoptable”.

We were approved into program through Lifeline Children’s services in 2014 to start our first adoption.  They quickly sent us a file of a little boy with quadriplegic Cerebral Palsy, and the most beautiful face we have ever seen.  So that was a no brainer!!  We brought our son Nolan home in 2015.  Many times in his updates they would make mention of a little boy who treated Nolan like his little brother, so yes of course I had to ask about him.  Silly question when you have just recently brought your child home and emotions are already running high. But when our agency informed us that there had never been a family to inquire about him before, we knew, we had to bring him home.

Francis is older than Nolan, and many times it is not suggested that you adopt out of birth order, but God has other plans and a vision we cannot see until hindsight after it is played out.  The obvious one was that we would have never known about Francis if it wasn’t for Nolan- he led us to him.  I truly believe that Francis would not have been adopted if we hadn’t pursued him.  But we also know that Nolan’s health was so critical that he would not have survived if we had not brought him home first.  Our boys have taught every single one of us some significant lessons in love and worth and how praying for God to break our hearts for what breaks His is a dangerous and rewarding prayer all in one.  The ties and links to our boys have started something, and our story doesn’t end there.  While we were in the waiting for Francis to come home, a little girl popped up in the waiting children list, beautiful and exactly like our Nolan.  Our intentions were to help advocate for her since we knew first hand the special needs she had and what adopting her would entail.  2 years later and every person who has viewed her file has stated she is just too severe for them.  The prayer renders again, break our hearts Lord, and prayers to God for her family and to shut the door on this for us.  So here we are, after God opened doors instead of shut them, running after a little girl who has severe needs but we know will be one of our biggest blessings!  Our sunshine every day!
